Picked a bowl of roses from the garden for the lounge this morning

I'm enjoying watching the slightly dopey young blackbirds. They move around contemplating everything so carefully; they never seem to know what is food, just pick every little thing up to try it and then either eat it or drop it! They also seem to think that the thinnest little shrub branch should hold their weight and look most confused when they end up back on the ground again.

We sat under our gazebo on Sunday evening watching a mother sparrow feed her young at the bird table when suddenly the honeysuckle bush just in front of us started vibrating - it was quiet eerie watching it.  Turns out there is a blackbird nest in there and we could just make out the chick staring out looking for his next meal - cute

Beautiful - I love roses.

Has anyone had success with Nigra seeds attracting finches? I have just been given a feeder, just need to get the seed. Lady who gave it said she had no luck!

I have up to thirty goldfinches visiting mine but I also feed sunflower hearts which they really love. It took around three weeks before they actually visited the feeders. It depends on where you place the feeders and also the quality of the seed. Some of the niger seed is very dry and "old" - it is worth paying out for top quality stuff.

It's only in the last couple of years that we have had goldfinches visiting to I put out niger seed feeders which they flock too.  The seed germinates and grows a tall daisy-like flower everywhere

Nature is full of surprises!

We're in the process of having a workshop constructed for OH's hobby ....... working on his beloved motor-bikes.  The huge 'A' frame has been fitted to the top of the walls and the tiles are going on the roof and guess what ?  Tucked away between the pieces of wood is a birds nest ..... we have noticed a black red-start flying back and forth.  We hope the building work doesn't frighten them off.  How lovely.

They are in my Utility Room too.

I wonder ...... the potting compost I used for the flower troughs on my window sills (which I planted yesterday) ...... did I plant Ants too ?

They've left eggs on the wooden window frames too.  Cheekly blighters - Ant Powder here it comes

Nowt wrong with ants    ......... I put a jar of jam or honey outside the house where they come in which they take back to the nest ....... [wonder if Mrs P has a smilie for that one  ] ............ otherwise I use the hoovery-thingy

I love ants. They are so important as part of the whole eco system. My mum used to sprinkle talcum powder around the doors when they had an ant problem. The ants didn't like to cross it but it didn't harm them.

Has anyone (probably Taz) got any idea of how I can feed my little birds without all the big birds scaring them all off. Not exactly sure what variety the big birds are but I suspect they are rooks and they are bullies. Anything I put out is eaten by them I have been considering one of the feeders that have an adjustable dome on top that you can set for smaller birds.  I feel sorry for my robins and finches and sparrows as they dont get a look in. I cant put out any fat balls or coconuts as within minutes we have a cloud of big black birds. Even the dog is getting fed up of them..


What can I do ??
