Whoops - forgot to update the baby starling count  :)

The first one arrived on the 13th May, as it always does, and yesterday we were up to fourteen young ones so that is encouraging but rather noisy!

Not been on this post recently but just caught up this morning. Last Sunday hubby and I were out a walk - you have to walk through lots of trees but ultimately you end up at the beach. Anyway we just got out the trees and we could hear a cuckoo - I can honestly say I have never heard one before. We stood and listened for ages - couldn't see it tho. Anyway on the way back we heard it again. Wonder if I should go log my cuckoo sound! On the same walk we had a baby deer run right out across in front of us and much later a vole did the same. Xxx

You could log it H&S especially if you don't normally hear one. Are you sure it was a baby deer and not a muntjac which ran across in front of you as most baby deer are born in June. Sounds as if you had a lovely wildlife walk!

I have no idea Taz _ i just assumed it was a baby deer because it was quite small - i will go and google the muntjac and see if it was the same.  We often see deer in the distance on this walk but this one ran right in front of us - was fab to see tho.  xxx

It was probably a muntjac - they breed all year round whereas our  native deer only have young in May/June. I like them but lots of people see them as pests. This is a good link http://www.bds.org.uk/muntjac.html

We have been away on holiday for the past 2 weeks and are quite sad as we have had to have our chickens 'put down'.  At almost 3 years old they were suffering with various health problems and we thought it best not to let them suffer so, well you know what had to be done.  A farmer friend, very caring and considerate, stayed at our house and lifted them out during the night.  We are now sad because their house is there but they are not  Boo Hoo !!

Hi taz thanks for the link. I had a look and thought it was defo like the one we saw. However when I read the blurb about them they are not found over the Scottish border. Hmm that's strange. Food for thought tho. Xxx

Sorry to hear about your chickens meggie. :(

I have got a hedgehog asleep in a cat carrier in my spare room. Last week an American girl this week a hedgehog - what a varied life I lead!

I found him curled up at the bottom of the fence when I hung out the washing this afternoon. We normally get visited every evening by three and possibly four hedgies. I tried everything possible to get him to uncurl but to no avail but a while ago he was roaming around the carrier but curled up as soon as I had a peek. I need to check him out as I think his left front foot is swollen from what I have seen. I don't want to take him over to http://www.hartwildlife.org.uk/ unless absolutely necessary and have been in touch with them by phone. I was hoping that I could release him when it is dark but until he is wandering properly around and has eaten or at least drunk something I wont be happy doing that. Of course he might be a she - can't tell until I can persuade it to unroll itself!!

It has unrolled - it is not good. Although he has eaten he seems to have paralysis to back feet and also swollen front feet. Poor little mite. Still, better in a cage than just lying out in the garden I suppose. He enjoyed the chicken and liver cat food mashed up with water - I had forgotten what messy eaters they are - but he is looking very poorly now. Such dear little paws.

There was an item on The 1 Show about long tailed tits nest building, it was absolutely riveting  ;) they lay up to 10 eggs in a small, expandable nest.

I'm getting really upset by the sparrowhawk that visits our garden. I know it's natural and the majority of the year I completely accept that he takes a few birds (he's got to survive too) but at the moment, the birds are feeding youngsters in their nests and he's wiping out so many of them I fear there are lots of little birds hungry and dying. A few days ago he killed a woodpecker. The remaining woodpecker was very busy trying to feed the babies and I fear that one too has now been killed. I absolutely love wildlife. We live in the country, I am lucky to have a beautiful view from my garden and see deer, badgers etc. I'm not good with the other side of it :(
