You need to beat him to it next year.

Yep - I do HB. I'll leave a few though for any future walnut-loving squirrels-soppy thing that I am.

:thankyou:  It is a worry that so many are disappearing. Lots of young this year have been found dehydrated and under-nourished. I would just like to say that if you see a hedgehog out in the daylight it always needs help.

Those I see are dead in the road  :'( - the ground is so hard but I can't leave cat food/live meal worms out as we are surrounded by cats  ::) .......

Off to the British Bird Fair at the weekend!  8)

I mount a vigil for mine CLKD and put the food out when they appear. I have four large adults visiting at the minute and the first one snuffles and bustles in at around 9.30 and the others appear sometime between 11 and 12.30 - quite often two arrive together and jostle to be the first one under the fence. The other night/morning there were three of them eating the dropped sunflower hearts under the feeder. What noisy eaters they were! They always visit the water first though and have a good drink. One of them sits in it while drinking which I am sure doesn't endear him/her to the others  ;D

Have fun at the bird fair.

I was bitten by a ladybird on Tuesday afternoon.  I tipped out the 'green' bin - that is the waste which goes for composting - to allow any ladybirds to fly away.  I had filled it with cut down yellow thingies  ??? - evening primrose stalks - where they like to hide: before refilling and standing on the kerb to be emptied. Ungrateful wretch, bitten for my kindness  :o - it itches like fury today!

I need to fill the bird feeders this week, there's a chill in the air and the robin is about again begging for meal worms - he's not hungry though, 'cos he ignored the dried ones  ::)

Never knew ladybirds bit.  ???

Last 2 years the rowan tree across the road was laden with berries & we had two bad winters.  This year it looks pathetic, so maybe no bad snow!  Or so the old tale goes.  Time will tell.

Had a lovely day at the Birdwatching Fair.  Met lots of really enthusiastic people, spoke to Johhny Kingdom and listened to Simon King, saw Mark Carwardine ....... as well as many visitors, all with a  huge conservation aim to unite like-minded people.  Off now to have a look through the bag of goodies, cards, info. etc.!

We talked to people about hedgehogs they advised getting a box that only a hog can get it's snout into and put a saucer of cat-food inside well our cats/kittens would use their paws to ease the saucer out  ;D - obviously the girl had never owned a cat  ::)

I've filled up the wild feeders today, goldfinches are on the nyger this afternoon in the warm sunshine  :-*

"Unlike true niger oilseed (now Nyjer), which is known by the scientific name Guizotia abyssinica and has yellow, daisy-like flowers, thistle has pink to purple ball-shaped flowerheads that consist of many spine-tipped bracts. ............ "

Is it possible to grow nyger seed in this country, I've some tall stems which I thought would be teasles but probably aren't and we don't think that they are cannibis ........

A pic of baby Ardvark, the nose is completely different! (like a snout) the one on you tube had a nose like a deer.
