Goldfinches are back!  I re-filled their feeders last night.  I feel really virtuous, carrying the bath water down for the front garden this morning, even though it's drizzling hard  ;D

Where did they go? Mine don't leave and eat me out of house and home this time of year - beginning feeding at 4.30 and still going strong at 9ish. They are lovely to watch though and I have upwards of 30 at the minute. I love it when they bring their young to visit. They sit in the apple tree chirruping away all fluttery feathers and open beaks.

Well done but I haven't resorted to carrying the bath water - it must take ages! Doesn't it do your back in? Mind you, I wouldn't have time to do mine before going to work and others need to use the bath after I've left so, phew, that's got me out of that. We don't have a water meter so the hosepipe is still being used.

Must admit I'm bit lazy with the bath water, I syphon it with a hose pipe from the bathroom out of the window into a plastic dustbin on the patio, but well done for all the running up and downstairs :)

Bath water? We only have showers so it's down the drain, but i'd never have though about re-using bath water.

I've lost all my trees this year, very disappointed, i had a cherry tree an apple tree and a corkscrew willow. They were all in bud at the end of April, but they are all dead now.

Do you know what's killed them? Mine are fine but are well established trees.

Nope, not a clue, they were all in pots, big pots, all on one level, i have acer trees on a lower level that were fine. I did empty lots of pots from the winter and i saw a few vine weevil, i disposed of the ones i found but wondered if some found their way into the trees? Eddie. x

Dry I expect.  Even fruiting trees which are well established need help in drought conditions, in order to keep the fruit on the branches.  I don't know whether Himself left the water last night ........... it's drizzling now but only 'in the air'  >:( expect it's saving itself for the weekend  ::)

4 goldfinches yesterday  :-* and That Kitten was chasing a frog so I rescued it ...........

What does having a water meter have to do with using the hose?   I use a hose and we've been metered since 1996.  We don't wash the cars or patio but keep the precious stuff for our pot plants and freshly planted veg..

I thought you were saving the bath water because of the cost of watering with a hose that's all.

We've been painting today so had the doors open to get rid of the fumes. Realised it was getting near to tea time for the birds so went into the kitchen to get their food … and the starlings were actually sitting on the doorstep waiting. For the cafe to open no doubt!  ;D

The female duck has been missing from our front garden for a while, she does every year at this time, and I know she's busy but I miss her, was lovely to see her earlier today waddling up to the front door with 8 chicks following close behind, back here for a good feed of seed oh and home made cake which I smothered with peanut butter for her - family weren't too happy to see their share of cake scattered out on the drive, but think she deserves it. Lots of baby wild birds in the back garden, what a lovely time of the year.

That's lovely Jenny - I can just picture them. Can I just ask that you soak the bread - I know it sounds yucky wet bread and peanut butter - but at HART Wildlife we often get ducks brought in this time of year with bread lodged in their throats - if it is wet then it slides down much more easily.

Sleepless - starlings are so clever!

Hi Taz, I never ever give them bread, or the birds, really bad for them - I bake cakes, think I did say cake on last post, but meno brain may not have ::) I like to give birds and "Millie" duck - yes afraid thats her name rich foods to help with energy levels, although never put roast fat out because when they preen it can oil their feathers to a point of making them greasy. So love wild life.

Whoops! Sorry for the mix up. Cake is obviously better than bread - although it can still be moistened. Are you sure it is a duck? "8 chicks following close behind" - could be a chicken  ;D ;D

Hi Jenny - HART (Hampshire Animal Rescue Team) is fairly local to me and I am a volunteer driver picking up casualties from people and taking them to the hospital for treatment. http://www.hartwildlife.org.uk/
