Can't you get your gun CLKD - poor little Warblers!

The cuckoo arrives in April
Lays it's eggs in May
Changes it's tune in the middle of June
And in July flies away.....

I love to see them.  There's been a Study done recently and it seems that the breast feathers are the same formation to that of a Sparrow hawk!

Yes it is one of their deterrents. I hate them to be honest - though hate may be too strong a word - so I will just say that I am not too keen on them! There are some brilliant photos here http://www.birdguides.com/webzine/article.asp?print=1&a=2111

On a walk last sunday and again this weekend we have seen in total four Oil beetles - large irridescent purply/black beetles - apparently they are quite low in number.

found this link which has a good picture of the oil beetle we saw - 'phone photos' no good needed a camera at the time.

A blackbird sang his socks off all of yesterday and when the building noise stops, I can hear him this morning  :-*  AND I've found a nymph on a plant near the pond  8)

I love hearing the birds singing, with the recent rain they've been celebrating I think!  I've currently got swallows building nests in the stable and they sit chattering away on the roof while I get on with my chores.  I also have jackdaws that are eyeing up the chimney pot.  On a not quite so positive note, I have a pet tumbling pigeon that turned up many years ago and he lives in our garden shed; over the last couple of weeks he has been joined by another two pigeons who have moved in and are busy carrying an assortment of twigs in for a nest, so I think I shall have to egg steal!

We've got sparrows nesting in the clematis on the front of the house, but my downstairs windowsill is disgusting, no matter how often I clean it it is covered with their calling cards!  They are lovely to watch though.

Today I can hear: sparrows, blackbird, dunnock and robin.  I can see a rose bud almost open, 2 new clematis flowers in deep purple; gooseberries; raspberry flowers; tadpoles; frogs; baby fish; nymph; Welsh poppies; alliums .............

We are expecting!  Momma bluebird carrying pine straw in the box today.  Have added two other boxes and wonder if they will attract others.  I love lying in bed (bad back) watching the progress - such a treat.

It's such fun to watch them - got a platform feeder to add to the others so the babes can eat comfortably when old enough. I alternate flat on back on ice/heat with careful walking.  This is the worst siege in years, but met a gal yesterday who lost lower leg due to MRSA post knee replacement, so I'll watch the birds and feel grateful.
