Plants I have lost in my garden due to exceptionally cold winter are:

1 Rosemary bush
2 Hebes
1 established evergreen clematis(can't remember variety)
1 of those shrubs that has long sharp leathery reddish leaves. Noticed lots of dead ones in other peoples gardens in this area too.
2 "hardy" fuschias

there's a blackbird nagging so expect one of the kittens is about  

everything is in Spring colour, tadpoles in the middle pond, pond plants in flower, birds singing day and night  

sorry missed this question, fish can eat lettuce but it also makes the pond grotty if they don't like it!  I dropped sweet corn in and that disappeared  

one of our clematis is flowering 4 months earlier than usual!

We've had a great weekend, covered lots of miles, seen several friends, done a LOT of gardening  I ache ALL over  could be gardening, could be

I think that I have inadvertently grown my own crop of mealworms    The birds make such a mess under the sunflower heart feeder that I put a strong piece of cardboard underneath (hadn't got anything else handy) so I could sweep up the dropped ones. They rot so quickly without the husks. Anyway, yesterday my husband was gardening and he noticed the robin pulling at a soggy corner of the cardboard. He went across and moved it. He came in and said that there were lots of beetles and maggots underneath it. I went out and there were loads of flour beetles and a wonderful crop of mealworms. The robin was very happy. Fascinating!

Oh Lucky You!  I've been trying to grow meal worms for years  and how did the robin know  .. ours are busy in the feeders again today!

I guess he saw one wriggling around the edge of the cardboard. They look like mealworms and the beetles definitely look like flour beetles - though I had to take a magnifying glass out with me to have a proper look.
I guess it was the warm weather which helped. Probably wont get anymore now the weather has turned chillier.

What method have you used?

Keeping them on bran and not removing the larvae or beetles - the only time they hatch is those worms which get free from the box, usually up a sleeve  which drops out then a few weeks later we find beetles 

It's cold tonight, heating back on.  Frost in the morning?

there are loads of sparrows here,,they live in the ivy growing up the flat next door to me...i,m dreading the council pulling it down,,its not  good for the bricks...there our loads of black birds here,,they keep eat my grass seed...and a havent seen many thrushes...i brought my baskets in last night in case of a frost...but my mums blue bells are comeing on a treat...she has been dead 16 years..,,they always remind me of her,,,she loved her garden...may be that is why i do..havent seen any buterflys,,but there are bees about,,there seems to be lots of whasps ,thourght it was a bit early for whasps..BEV

The Council are not allowed to pull the ivy until at least November due to birds nesting in it, i.e. sparrows, wrens, pied wagtails ..... ivy doesn't do much harm to buildings anyway.  It is mainly self clinging.  Have a look on the Environment Web-site for the dates when it can be cut down so that you can tackle any workmen that may arrive!

We've had butterflies here and a HUGE Queen wasp over the weekend!

It's from 1st March to 31st August in most places. Even then you only have to check that there are no nests before you start working. This is the get-out-clause that a lot of contractors use "I checked but couldn't see any" and by the time the nest has been destroyed it is too late. My neighbour had his leylandii chopped a few years ago resulting in seven goldfinch nests being destroyed. He was mortified and has never done that again. The good news was that almost all the fledglings survived at HART Wildlife Hospital - I took them over in a feather duster!
