But same size I thought and kind of clustering altogether like starlings do. My poor failing peri-meni eyes could easily confuse them.

I have to apologise!  The RSPB site says they are 'like' starlings however

for a look-see.  Starlings are dark coloured, group and scuttle around mainly on the ground for grubs, will roost in trees and swoop and swirl before settling for the night.

This is the first time I've even heard of waxwings - led a very sheltered live, I have - NOT. However, looking at the Link, aren't they beautiful.

How can anyone say that a Waxwing is like a starling - apart from the fact that they have beaks, feathers and two feet?    I have just checked the RSPB website and they say they are the "same size as a starling" so I guess that's where the confusion has come in. After all an orange is the same size as an apple but they do look different!

That's true but then again if you saw one you wouldn't know what it was because you would be looking for something that looked like a starling - which are very pretty in the sunlight with their irridescent feathers - a most under-rated bird I reckon.

Except around the stock yards because starlings carry disease .........  but they are comical

Starling shaped I meant. Not starling coloured.  Only trying to cheer those who hadn't seen them yet. Tho I really did think they were at first before i realised half the neighbours were standing in the road looking at them, which they wouldn't have bothered to do normally....

Have never seen one but shall be looking now!  "Our" thrush was singing as I left for work this morning - 1st time this year - wonderful!

I could not sleep the other night, so got up for a little while. I opened the window to get some fresh air and heard birds singing at 2:30am. Anyone got any ideas on why they would be doing this. I really was not imagining things, there were not many chirping but enough that I noticed it.

It will be Robins or  Blackcaps Honeybun. They often sing at night. Last winter I was walking through Reading town centre at around 2 in the morning and there were Robins singing on every light cluster. It was really lovely to hear. http://www.rspb.org.uk/advice/expert/previous/singingatnight.aspx

you are wild life in both senses of the word Taz - I envy your walking thru town at 2 in the morning - I remember the days. These days 11.30 is a daring late night!

Thanks Lovely - I have never been one for sleeping so 2 in the morning means I am an hour late for bed.    My normal pattern is be asleep by 1.30 (go to bed at 1) and get up around 6.15.

Can't believe that I'm hearing birds twittering at 2.30 in the morning already.  Usually doesn't start happening until about May.  Then about 6.30 ish we have oyster catchers, well that's what I'm told they are (I thought it was seagulls), squaking and stamping on the roof.  First time I heard them on the roof I thought it was something in the loft, it was so loud!  Do they wear bovver boots?
