How come very few birds came to my selection of nuts and seeds over the very cold weather - they are all there today, I can only assume the nuts etc were too frozen for the birds to peck poor things!! :(

You  may be right there Shirley - I get mine in at night and then put them back out just before first light in the morning. Saves them using up valuable energy trying to first peck at and then digest frozen stuff. A few years ago I went out at midnight to get them in as I had forgotten earlier in the evening and surprised a mouse who was sat quite comfortably in one of the saucers munching away  ;D

IN very cold weather I try to have one set of feed inside to swop first thing, I've been out to put fresh water out after another below freezing night, shaken the nuts and nyger feeders, topped up the meal worm containers .......

We had a strange bird in our garden yesterday and without the book I can't remember what it was  ::) - Hubby took photos and we identified it in the book - which is downstairs and I'm not!

Because it's Winter so a Reed Bunting in winter plumage is to be expected!

But some birds don't alter their plumage  ::) but those that do so are stunning!  Haven't seen it since though and only 1 yellow hammer in and out so far but plenty of goldfinches .......

Birds' water changed, birds fed and watered, indoors now ........ ICICLES outside our landing window though wish I could post a piccie  8)

We've got amazing icicles too! Keep reminding hubby to be careful when he goes out for a smoke in case one falls on his head! They could do a lot of damage!

This year we have some humungous icicles hanging from the cliffsides! Never seen that before- amazing!
Also. keep seeing the occasional long-tailed tit on the peanuts. Don't know where the rest of its gang is!

Dawn is late breaking today so haven't 'done' the birds, next job on the List ......... I broke some of the icicles above the back door and Hubby took photos of the one near our landing window which is slowly growing .....

Our blackbirds are always waiting in the dark for their food. They start clucking clucking away around 6.15 and I wander out in my wellies and my dressing gown to feed them. They have become so tame during this cold spell and one actually sat on the toe of my boot this morning. Hunger drives away most fears.

I think they are all in mine! Lots of the small birds - finches and tits - plus the normal robins and blackbirds. I have put a chicken carcass on the birdtable so the robin is having a right feast. It looks very incongruous - a robin pecking away at a chicken - not right somehow!
