The spines were floppy.  DH has checked today and there's no sign of Life.

Night cameras have been pointing at the door to 1 of the winter boxes 9 days/nights and there has been a lot of activity, day and night!  There are probably 3 in one box, some dragging in leaves in the early hours/dawn.  This morning I've collected dry leaves and put near the boxes in case there isn't enough to keep them warm.  We don't like to lift the lids and scare them. 

They are scuttling in and out every 2-3 mins.  All looking healthy. All 'busy doing nothing, working the whole day through' ........ sorry, got carried away  .  The air is so warm critters don't know if they are flying a bike or riding a kite!  They are also finding bits to eat though 1 missed a large beetle which was crawling on the box

This may be the wrong place to post this BUT does anyone know how to get rid of mealie bugs? My daughter has a huge amount of plants in her room,mostly succulents and these bugs keep appearing,it said cinnamon and it did seem to get them but yet more have appeared 🤷‍♀️

I get them on cactii, bloody nuisance  .  A thin firm paintbrush with meths is my method, though don't breathe in too deeply  .  Kills by suffocation.  Too spiny to risk picking them off by hand!

The bugs themselves are grey and they spread a white coat for protection - however, meths soaks through ;-)

Aww thanks,will that work on all the succulents? She's scared she kills them (plants not bugs lol) she's been stabbing them with a pin and picking them of 🤢🤢

That isn't even theurapuetic.  One dabs the critters with a paint brush, alcohol will do it too.  Don't let the liquid run into the plant, it's more a sticky brush to pick them up with.

Birds flying backwards this morning

Weather dry and cold.  We watched about 20 field fares stripping berries from a hedge row this morning.  A few red wings were present.

Our woodpecker is now a regular visitor,clinging on to the side of the feeder,my neighbour didn't believe me,said he's been here for over 35 years and never seen one,showed him my photo..........walked away with smug written all over my face

It's a great time of year as birds flock to gardens that probably wouldn't be seen in the Summer.

Just signed up with the rspb for the big garden bird watch,sooooo many varieties here,looks like fun,think it starts on the 26th......could be wrong lol

Just the three pheasants turned up atm, just be a quiet day...  ;DFlock of long tail got a on the fat feeders. About 8 blackbirds along with the usual suspects.
It's surprising just  how many species we all get in our gardens. We were exceptionally lucky to get turtle doves a few years ago,  hope they might be back one day. Still got wood  pigeons instead. Lots of them...

You are very lucky to have turtle doves. We have lots of collared doves but I've never seen a turtle dove. I'll keep a listen out in the spring when they return from their winter holidays! I think I live just on the edge of their known area.

In a way we are 'cheating ' a bit.... About 5 miles away is a nature reserve which is a small breeding ground for the turtle doves,so I think they mind of popped in on a day out! We love the dollars doves they seem so gentle.
