Taz, I didn't know dormice lived in trees. I bet its a field mouse then. I'll show her the photos. She said she went into the greenhouse last night and one of the mice came and peeped out at her from behind a shelf. She said they're so sweet its like they're straight out of a children's story book. Oh dear, will she be strong enough to stop feeding them I wonder

There is some info here about mice http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/mammal-forums/6815-humane-mouse-traps-2.html

I wouldn't have thought that it is the same mice who have been living there over the past few years - they tend to live less than a year in most cases. There are probably a lot more hiding somewhere. I don't mind them myself but I must admit my husband was right about them being in the house - they kept us awake! Don't they eat all the plants in her greenhouse?

Mice will eat seeds from pots and will nibble the tops too if they are hungry.  Sweet peas seeds are  a favourite  ::)

If i was to put a fat ball type thing inside a bird house with a 20-25mm opening, would the smaller birds find it?

Eventually!  So would mice.  Starlings are acrobats though and are able to get at most things  ::)

I've found dragon fly larvae in our ponds - I think!  I was scooping off chickweed but had to stop 'cos I kept catching beasties  ::) - 3 weeks ago it was tiny newly hatched fish!

Ah ha, Maybe i could put the bird house beside the other feeders? My back garden looks like something from the birds. Had to order new massive filter for pond. Eddie. x

I don't think my friend has many plants in her greenhouse - probably just has it for storage. I suppose it's likely she thinks she's seeing the same mice all the time whereas like you said Taz, there's probably loads of them

Just been reading one of those shopping magazines that comes with the newspapers and I saw a plug-in pest control device that emits either a scent or sound (didn't read it properly) that animals we call pests do not like. I wonder whether it would be worth mentioning to her.  Anyone know anything about such devices? (Not sure if she would be able to plug one in in her greenhouse mind you)

I am not sure that they really work to be honest. She would be better to block up all the entrances. Could she get the humane traps so that she could catch them and release them outside before blocking up the holes? You have to empty them fairly quickly though as they can nibble through the plastic eventually.

Ha Ha!  Taz I just read the link you provided. I couldn't help laughing at the post about mice coming out at night and swinging from curtains in Tom & Jerry style. And releasing peanut butter smeared mice into the wild.

I'll suggest the humane traps and hole blocking on Monday when I see her.

Thanks

We have these humane traps, we had to alter it though, our mice/mouse could get in and steal the cheese and escape, without eating the trap? It/they must've worked out a system on the metal trap bit that shut them in? Eddie. x

The mice in our shed used his/her tail to spring the trap night after night - to eat the cheese.  Until he/she ran out of tail  ::) .... I have those plug in humane thingies but can't use them because we keep stick insects  :D

One of the many Starlings just flew into my kitchen window. Poor wee thing, i've got it in a box on the table in the garden.

Leave it quietly.  It may well recover from the shock.

I've cleaned out and re-filled the seed/nut feeders this morning.  Out of all those I have I still think the long plastic hangers are best for seed.

I had to move it, it was lying on top of a cupboard type thing, but too close to the edge, if it fell?? So it's still in the shoe box. I hope it's okay.  :(
As for bird feeders, we stopped feeding because all the wild grass that grew below the table, these suet feeders hopefully will be better.

Our chickens get the grass from the bird seed which germinates, our front garden is full again so need to have a good pull at it, too wet yet though  8)
