Dormice - pretty little critters?  Well apparently not!

The Romans brought dormice to England, they liked them soaked in honey so built special small honey pots for them to gorge themselves in B4 being eaten.  Now apparently a larger variety has appeared across parts of the UK and it will: like grey squirrels killing our Native reds : eventually take over so that our 'native' dormice will die.  They are already endangered and although not indiginous; not many critters are in this country, William has a lot to answer 4  ; it would be sad to have spent £Ks on conservation to have it all go to waste 

I wonder if the dormouse is considered "native" if it was brought over here by the Romans?

I think that the edible dormouse certainly will native Taz.  Like many of the herbs: lavender, rosemary, chives; trees and shrubs that were brought over later.  Including Japenese knot weed.  There aren't many native trees across the UK according to various web-sites and TV programmes.

What we don't need is a larger dormouse demolishing 'ours'

A nature lover from Salisbury has adopted an unexpected pet after finding a garden dormouse in the New Forest.

Sean Foote was driving near Godshill on Sunday when he spotted the creature by the side of the road.

Mr Foote believes the rodent, which does not occur in the UK, may have stowed away from mainland Europe in a car or lorry.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said the species was not classed as "invasive".

The garden dormouse, which is found in southern Europe, generally grows to 10-15cm in length, not including its tail.

We had a pet bank vole. Found it in a bedroom (how did it get up the stairs?) very poorly so we put it a cage next to the Guinea pigs and fed it. When it recovered it was soooo quick, no way DD could handle it.

Did anyone see the poor cat that got stuck to a rat trap,it was so badly covered in glue it had to be put to sleep,vet said people should stop using these sticky traps,why do they sell such horrid things,not a nice way for ANY animal to die

Nope hadn't seen that article  .  That's why we aren't using poison or open traps for the rats  currently being problematic.  Also birds can get caught on the glue traps.  I don't like those sticky yellow sheets for greenhouses either - spiders and ladybirds get caught.

Earlier I was going to chop back the verbena bonseiosis - an hour ago I watched 11 gold finches taking the seeds :-)  . 
I had long tailed tits flit through on Sunday morning, they didn't even stop

There's a petition in Change.org trying to get glue traps banned.

We have a hedgehog sleeping in her box in a corner of the garden

We haven't done so due to having a rat! but there are slugs and any meal worms that escape.  We may put the camera to see if it's active.  Exciting certainly

Slugs are not nutritionally great for hedgehogs although everyone thinks they devour them voraciously. It would be good to see if yours is active! Our cameras are still on but no hedgehog activity for a while now.

You're so lucky, I haven't seen a hedgehog for 20 years. Too many badgers round here.
