My sparrowhawks don't coast - they perch in the oak tree and swoop across the garden. I just wish they dispatched the prey more quickly. I hate the screaming the starlings make as they get bits of them torn out. Beautiful birds to look at though.

Hope you don't have a fight CLKD - are you sure it's not a porcupine??  ;D

 :-\. I slept.  From 3.45 until 6.00, then from 8.30 p.m., quick bath; all night until I woke at 8.45  :-\

It's rained.  Hard.  Apparently but I didn't hear a thing.

Did you manage it? It's so chilly here would be nice to know he/she is either heavy enough for hibernation or will be fostered over winter.

Oh sorry - I hadn't caught up with that - sorry you are feeling poorly. Maybe Himself could do it tonight?

Thank you for the advice. We have four feeders along the wisteria wall including one with a cage. We have a solitary magpie who was born this year, he hangs around the hedge line and comes into our garden. He is an opportunist and has learnt how to rock the feeders even  the one with the cage round it. I do not think the built in saucer at the bottom is deep enough to keep the food in. There is a group of obese pigeons who too rock everything containing food. All birds are welcome it just that they eat anything around here. With regard to sparrow hawks we have one who flies over the fields in the early morning what a magnificent sight when it swoops. Nature is wonderful.

What a shame the  magpie is on it's own. We have three lots of two born this year - it's unusual for all six to survive but this year they did. One has had a broken leg since the beginning of August but is doing well and still looks in good condition. By "obese" pigeons do you mean wood pigeons  ;D

Haha re the rocking birds! I have a big transparent saucer underneath the very long feeder of mixed seed (which the sparrows mainly raid) and my resident collared doves worked out they could balance it by one on each sdie of the saucer eating everything that spilt as well as having a go at the pecking part - it wasn't meant for them - they also manage to get into the table part too!

Mine sit in the saucer too together with the wood pigeons. I love the way the pigeons sit one each side and try to peck each other while the sparrows dart in and out taking the seed.

The nuthatch has been really busy today but he/she flies off with seed, sunflower hearts, nuts etc. and stows them under a roof tile across the road. The minute it comes back to the garden a great tit has been going and nicking what has just been hidden. It's been going on all day. So funny.

Hope you feel better soon CLKD, can't wait to hear how the little one is getting on.

I do hope you (or your OH) have been able to keep putting out the meal worms for the hogs at night, the poor little things have learnt to rely on you.

I weighed my hedgie tonight - I only have one visiting as far as I know. Came in at 625 grams so he/she should be fine. I also checked for ticks and breathing problems to make sure there is no lung worm but all seems to be ok. He/she wasn't impressed.

Thank you. It's something I've done for years. Always give them check ups when possible throughout the year and take them to the rescue centre if unsure. You need a sturdy box to keep them in overnight though. Have had a couple of escapees  ;D
