Occasionnaly we hear tawny owls - you know that there are 2 different sounds dependant on if it's male or female?

Quiet here today.  No live meal-worms so birds are having to fend for themselves …… at least after all the rain the ground is quite soft.

The female does the Keee-wick call and the male the hoot. Both sounds on this recording http://sounds.bl.uk/environment/british-wildlife-recordings/022m-w1cdr0001537-0700v0

Ahem! I haven't had any alcohol for three weeks now and there are three bottles of wine in the fridge! Am not on any meds either and I can't go out - apart from my ten minute walk - so  :na:

It must be hot walking in this weather!

Our (spotted) woodpecker has been reguarly feeding on the peanuts - quite early in the morning though, and a couple of days ago a sparrowhawk came and landed in the "roof" (of the bird-table) for a couple of minutes - waiting for the sparrow flock that demolish the seed and fat balls so quickly. Makes it all worthwhile to see one of these 3m from me, staring at me through the window (no doubt looking at its own reflection!). Hope to see it take a sparrow one of these days!

Lots of Buzzard noise / calls at the moment.
Apparently the young are turfed out by their parents at this time and are looking to establish their own territories. Don't know if that explains the one that we found in the stable last week.

I had a sparrow hawk snatch a blue-tit from right in front of me several years ago, I heard the thump as the 2 connected.  Garden was quiet for a while.

Hedgehogs around each evening after 10.30 ……… slurping the dried, soaked meal worms I put out in a low dish.

Dragonflies around the pond but only occasionally.  LOTS of butterflies  :-*

Buzzards mewing last week, 3/4 circling over-head ……...

I'm glad my sparrowhawks seem to have gone somewhere else this year. I know they have to live but I do find it distressing when they take birds from the feeders - especially last year when they took the female bullfinch. The male's distress had to be seen to be believed but he successfully continued to rear the chicks on his own which was impressive.

Forty three young starlings this morning - almost time to take the netting down from around the bird table which has given them protection from the cats since the Spring. It might not look very pretty but it does the job.
