Last night hubby and I went for a jog down by the river (big mistake but that's another story!). Anyway he was in front of me and I saw something fall from one of the bushes at my side. I stopped suddenly to see what it was and it was a little field mouse. We looked at each other for a bit and he decided I wasn't a threat so began eating his dinner. Hubby came back to see where I had got to and the wee mouse never flinched - he was so cute. We would have stayed longer but a dog walker came along and scared the mouse away - grr!

Anyway jog was a shambles - it was too hot - I walked more than I jogged - I have twisted my hip and hurt it - walking upstairs is painful - by 9pm I had a migraine that kept me up all night and I only managed to fall asleep at around 5am this morning! Looks like I am never going to be a jogger! The mouse however made my night. Xxx

That's a shame about the house martins Pennyfarthing - it's the same with swallows, swifts and bats I'm afraid. Owls have taken a hit too with the wet weather. They get easily water logged.

Sorry about your jog H&S - although seeing the mouse was good. Did you see what it was eating? Stick to brisk walking - better for the knees!

These things happen in the world of bird feeding I'm afraid mrs purple. It's all part and parcel of nature in the raw. It takes around three to four weeks for smaller birds to adjust to a new feeding station. This is the quietest time of year. Most birds are moulting and so don't fly too far. They wont always visit a new feeder while their take-off time is slower than normal. Also, it depends on the type of seed you are feeding. Where did you get it from - if you don't mind me asking. Many bird seed suppliers use cheap fillers which none of the birds will eat. Have you positioned the feeder close to cover so that the birds have hedges or bushes to perch in before they make the final flight to the feeder. Also, do you have a saucer on the bottom of the feeder? Some birds don't like to perch but prefer to sit to feed.

You can't really feed some and stop others visiting so pigeons will always join in and squirrels can be a nuisance but fun to watch. I solved the problem by feeding the squirrels in a separate area - squirrel food and peanuts on a separate bird table - and they didn't bother with the feeders. My feeders are hung from the trees so are around 15 feet off the ground. A friend has one of the poles though and gets a wide variety of  birds.

Interesting tips here http://www.crying-fox.com/birds.htm

As I said this is the quietest time of year for birds. Most species have finished breeding and so have returned to their more natural habitat to moult and get their new feathers all pristine and ready for winter. Most of my greenfinches have gone and there are only three blackbirds left out of a dozen or so which have been daily visitors since spring. Oyr local forest which has been quiet for the past few months is now alive with finches and tits (no funny comments please) high up in the trees. It's like they have gone on holiday now the kids have left home.

If you would really like to give it a go then I would suggest starting in September. Be warned though - once you start and we get into winter you have to keep going....

There was a photo in the Broadsheets yesterday of 8 red kites that have been found doused and wet through so have been taken in to Tiggywinkles for drying out  ::)

I like most kinds of wild life but prefer four legs and no more.

Driving out of the supermarket car park this week a rat dashed out in front of us  :o :o

The supermarket is near a stream and also the beach. We are never far away from the sea where I am.

I would rather not see a rat heading towards Morisons though.

Isn't a harvest moon a full one? We have only got half a moon at the minute.
