That's the Green Woodpecker (funnily enough!) and it wasn't looking for worms but ants and other little bugs! I love it's laughing call - which is where the nickname of "Yaffle" comes from - to yaffle is to laugh and you can listen to it here http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/g/greenwoodpecker/index.aspx if you want to! There's a nice clip here of one feeding its young http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qVFcBlBj-8&feature=related

I love them and they love my ants nests in the summer!

What a great way to start my US day - watching the woodpeckers on your utube link - beautiful. Thanks, Taz.

You're welcome Trey  :sunny: I do like all the Woodpeckers although they do take the nestlings of other birds  - much the same as the Jays and the Magpies. They have different tongues too - the Green Woodpecker has barbs so that it can easily spear the ants and bugs and the Greater Spotted has such a long tubular tongue that it wont sit on the floor of its mouth so it has a special cavity which means it is stored up the side of the neck and behind the ear somehow! There are some lovely photos here http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=great+spotted+woodpecker+tongue&hl=en&site=webhp&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=fmcZT423N4OYhQf3ndC4DA&ved=0CFcQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=685

Pied wagtail is back for meal worms, I had some live ones delivered today and he is over the moon until one of the kittens comes visiting  :o. Robin isn't as brave this year but has noted that there is a treat on the patio  ;)

I haven't got into the habit of buying mealworms as I really haven't got any more cash to spend on all the food they get through and once I start I will have to continue..... but my wagtails, both pied and the grey/yellow ones, love grated cheese but they have to battle it out with the robins!

The bullfinches are on the feeder at the minute - they are always very late leaving - and the little wren is hopping in and out of the trellis.

<waves to Taz > - haven't seen our wren since about November  :( and robins are in short supply this year.  Blackbird is about, collared doves, a few starlings; I have bought live worms for years++ spending about £1,000 annually, but this Winter they haven't 'asked' for them, in fact that last lot went 'off' oh the smell  :o - so the chooks got them.  The birds aren't eating the peanuts very fast but are enjoying black sun-flower seeds and occaasionally, niger seed this year - the fat balls are getting a hammering too .........  :whist:

It's funny how birds in different areas of the country eat different things. Mine never bother with the fat balls. I feed a good all round seed mix in two large feeders which I fill once a day this time of year plus a feeder with sunflower hearts, one with niger seed and one with  peanuts. I also feed a breakfast for the starlings and blackbirds plus any others which might fancy it of biscuit crumbs, sultanas, grated cheese, shredded suet and any table scraps. The blackbirds are always waiting for their helping under the apple tree. I tend to put the food out around 6.30 and even though it is still dark the blackbirds are quietly "clucking" to themselves.

The sunflower hearts are adored by all of the finches (green, gold, chaff and bull) plus the tits and the robins. The niger seed is eaten by the goldfinches and any visiting siskins but all the other birds have beaks too big to fit into the slits. At the moment I have a flock of around thirty goldfinches, ten or so greenfinches, loads of chaffinches depending on the time of day and one pair of bullfinches (which is as it should be). I am visited by upwards of thirty starlings every morning. There are around a dozen blackbirds and four robins plus two wagtails and the ever present collared doves and wood pigeons.  The blue and great tits have been infrequent visitors to the feeders this year but I believe this is because it has been a mild winter because when I am walking in our nearby forest the trees are alive with them so they must be finding more natural food. I haven't seen any redwings or fieldfares either but they are out in the countryside in quite big flocks. I buy mine from Jacobi Jayne mail order and it costs around £15 a week in seed. Frightening but I don't want to lose my flocks!!

The birds are looking great but the garden is a mess!!

I'm considering not feeding the birds in my garden as I usually do once the current supply runs out because of my new little cat. My old cat preferred to watch them from the comfort of her chair in the conservatory and rarely caught any. My new cat is young, alert and very quick and so I don't think its fair to encourge birds into my garden any longer. There are several neighbours who feed them so I think they will just move on down the road.

I will miss watching them but I would certainly not enjoy watching them get caught and mauled by my cat, and then be thinking it was my fault for encouraging them into my garden.

4 thrush-like birds on next doors' shrub with yellow berries on, think they are red-wings.   :bounce:

We had some yesterday but they have disappeared off now the weather is a bit milder. Beautiful birds - I love watching them. No fieldfares so far though.

My garden has been sadly lacking in birds this winter. I can only think its because its been very mild.

Last year in the big freeze they were lining up for a place at the table and this year I have so many empty places.

I do have blue tits and robins blackbirds and the occasional thrush. Collared doves and pigeons and sometimes a magpie or two.

I miss the numbers I had last year although I guess it means they are not struggling so hard for food. I have not even had a pheasant this year apart from on my plate.   ;D ;D
