Continuous HRT/bleeding worry
« on: June 13, 2020, 03:28:54 PM »

Hi everyone,

I've posted here previously and received lots of helpful replies, so was just wondering if someone would be able to help  :)

I was diagnosed with POI at 35, periods eventually stopped at 36 but I didn't start taking HRT until last April (I'm 40 now). I saw a private consultant after issues with my own GP and other so called ?experts? but she was lovely and listened to my concerns. She recommended continuous estrogen and and utrogestan as I hadn't had a period for 2 years and explained it suited some women as there would be no spikes in the hormones so would also avoid the ups and downs of a normal cycle and keep my lining thin.

For the first 6 months, I had a bleed approximately every 3 weeks, along with all of the pmt symptoms and it had really started to get me down. Then after exactly 6 months, the bleeding completely stopped (yay!). I've been fine on the 2 pumps of gel and 1x utrogestan and not had any really issues for 7 months. Last month I had tender breasts and felt slightly hormonal and I must admit, some months I've felt like my body had been going through a cycle but it's not been enough to bother me. However last week, I had a feeling I would start bleeding as I had really tender breasts/sore and sensitive nipples, restless legs, spots, bloating and all the other classic pmt symptoms I used to experience. I then started getting pelvic twinges on my right side (which I'd experienced in the first 6 months, what I can only describe what feels similar to ovulation pains).Low and behold My period arrived! It felt like the periods I used to get, wasn't really heavy and was done and dusted in 5 days.

Now I'm worrying incase this means the utrogestan hasn't been doing what it should have done. It really doesn't feel like a random bleed and feels hormonal. I've been working at home and whilst I've been busy I've been a lot less stressed (work in a tense environment with a lot of strong personalities and spend most of the time feeling on edge!) I've been so much calmer and also have been eating better and exercising more, so I wondered if my own hormones have decided to kick back in again? I know with POI, this can sometimes happen but does anyone know if this may have caused me to have a period? Also, I've generally been having dinner earlier but still taking the utrogestan at the same time. Wondering also if the slight change would be affecting the absorption and throwing everything out of sync!

it's been nice taking the continuous HRT and not having to worry about a monthly bleed, but I'm wondering if I'd be more suited to cyclical. I also worry about the breast cancer risk of taking continuous. So much to think and worry about, aargh  :o

Sorry for rambling on, but I know I can voice my concerns on here and you?ll understand. Hoping someone might be able to put my mind at rest a bit or maybe make any suggestions.

Thank you as always

im sure someone will be along soon who can help. I was on evorel conti patches but I kept bleeding every other week, so I would come on for 5 days, then be off for a week then come on again, before this I was period free for 16 months, spoke to GP who sent me for a scan and everything was fine, so GP has suggested moving to a sequi regime, so yesterday I started with 2 weeks of evorel 50, then 2 weeks of evorel conti - i'm hoping this works - the only thing im not happy about is at the age of 56 im now having periods again and I was enjoying not having them. I went on HRT for really bad VA, this has improved.... i'm so confused, I think I have so many questions but no answers... good luck

Hi Robotwars,

Thanks so much for your reply  :) it's good to hear about your experience with this. Like you, after being period free for almost 2 years, I was enjoying not having to worry about them every month. But I do wonder if I?ll have to go down the sequi route too if it doesn't settle.

it's all so confusing isn't it and hard to know what to do for the best sometimes. Good luck with the new regime, hope you find it suits and things settle for you quickly xx
