Growing vegetables
« on: March 18, 2020, 03:10:18 PM »

Does anyone have tips about which vegetables to start growing in the spring and if best from seed or seedlings from garden centre?

Grow what you like to eat  :) my better half loves going into the garden and picking runner beans to eat, he's always disappointed when the season ends. Try different varieties of produce that are not available in shops.

You also need to consider the conditions in your garden, is it sunny ?

Gardeners world starts back Friday night  :)

There are some cheap magazines on the shelves for seasonal advice and the internet will let you know when to buy and plant seeds.  Do U have a garden centre close by?  We buy plants that are grown on ready to plant.  I use Buckingham Garden Centre for ideas, or Sarah Raven.

Maybe make a list of what you like to eat, what space you have and soil condition.

We grow peas, all types of beans but there are never enough  ;D. Bean flowers encourage bees.  Don't do well with tomatoes and cucumbers require shelter.  Pumpkins are variable, we had 1 that wandered across the plot 4 'miles' 2 years ago like a triffid  ::)

Parsnips, beetroot, Welsh onions ....... leeks.  We avoid brassicas as we have too many trees over head and they get worm, as do carrots: there's a fly that attacks those.

Radishes which need thinning regularly

Nasturtium seeds to brighten up salads
Borage - blue flowers for salads and drink - bees love 'em
Marigolds - add to salads

Is there a gardening club in your area?  have a look-C in your local gardens ;-) make notes.  Let us know.

Thanks for the advice girls! 👍

I will make notes of what I like. I like most vegetables. I have a small south facing garden and I thought I would try growing a fan style apple tree up the fence.

Maybe pots of potatoes. I like carrots but probably need more space.

Will watch gardeners world. Great 👍 x

We grow potatoes in green bags, I think we got them in Wilko. If you like a particular variety of potato they are easy to grow and its exciting emptying the bag and collecting the tubers  :)

I like growing courgettes, again easy and one plant gives me plenty, the flowers are lovely and can be stuffed but I've not tried that.

We had a robin build a nest in a bag which had spuds growing in it  :o how the local cats or sparrow hawk didn't find it and the young I will never know!  We didn't even realise until we went to empty the spuds, the nest was empty.   He fed his mate in our greenhouse one year, how the young didn't roast I will never know!

Raised beds - that is 3 feet high from the ground - are good too, less far to bend ;-)

As two hoots says grow what you like to eat. I really enjoy growing veggies from seed from salads, peas/beans, carrots, tatties, cucumber, strawberries, tried a variety of things, not always successfully (Scottish weather not great for alot of things eg tomato's, prolific in number but few turned red even in leanto green house). If you have a Lidl/Aldi nearby you can get great prices on gardening things from seeds, potting things, greenhouses (plastic ones) etc. I keep a journal too it's interesting to compare from year to year what you grew, when and whether it was successful or not. If you had beds where you will be growing veggies, remember to rotate them so you don't end up with any nasties. If you are bothered with slugs, I have found nematodes to be the best thing for getting rid of them. Keep us up dated how you get on!! x
