Testogel - possible side effect?
« on: February 28, 2021, 02:45:42 PM »

So pleased to have just discovered this forum!

Wondered if anyone can help...

Following a surgical menopause three years ago (I still have my uterus though), I was stripped of all Ostrogen for 6 months as I was Stage 4 endo and had extensive surgery to help with lesions on my bowel, bladder, intestines and uterus/ovaries.  After lots of checks I was then popped onto Provera, Oestrogel and Testogel.

I have had six monthly checks with blood tests to check everything going well but recently have developed very intense pain on my right hand side, along my waistband area and radiating to my side.  They have done lots of scans suspecting gall bladder issues and appendix etc. which have all been negative.  It was only after a blood test showed I had no Oestrogen in my system at all (despite following the HRT regime), that the docs changed my meds and upped the Oestrogel pumps and said that this could be the cause of the pain.

My question is though, has anyone else had pain around their sides/stomach from using Testogel for some time?  It has occurred to me that the exact area that I rub the gel in is exactly where the pain is.  The only thing that helps is my Tens machine (not really Co Codamol or Tramadol).  I only put a pea size amount three times a week and rub in on my stomach.  Has anyone else experienced this localised pain?

I might be barking up the wrong tree but thought I would ask!

Thanks in advance for any help/thoughts  :)

Hi Meggiemoo

I'm also in surgical menopause for 5. 5 years and am still struggling to balance HRT.

I have not had your symptoms but wanted to say that most women are advised to rub testosterone gel on onto their inner thighs, never heard of rubbing it onto the stomach area.

It also sounds like you weren't absorbing the Oestrogel.

How are you getting on now? I also have a history of endometriosis.

This sounds more like nerve pain if the usual painkillers don't work but the TENS machine does? Could you have adhesions from the surgery or could more endo have developed? My daughter in law has severe endo and can no longer work and has many adhesions from all of the laparoscopies she has had. The usual painkillers don't work on the pain.

The other thing that can cause pain like this is something called Allodynia. It has various causes but you suffer pain in different areas of the body with no apparent reason. There is also something called Abdominal Wall Pain which can be caused by surgery. I believe a nerve becomes trapped but I haven't explored much about this. I just remember my daughter in law's consultant mentioning it.
