Author Topic: Has anyone experienced a recurrence of physical symptoms whilst on HRT?  (Read 1730 times)

Hello ladies,

I wrote recently about my struggles with anxiety and depression, but last week for the fist time since I altered my HRT in December I had a few days which were much more manageable and I felt I had turned a corner mood-wise. However, my premenstrual night sweats, which had pretty much gone since I started HRT, have come back this week. I was supposed to have a withdrawal bleed last week and still no sign of period, even though I've had a period regularly since I started HRT in June 2018 and even when I was losing my mind with panic for weeks on end my periods never stopped! This is so strange and I feel out of my depth.

The anxiety is still there but I'm hoping if I hang on in there it might continue to get better even if I have some dips. If anyone of you are going through anything similar then apparently it can take three to four months before you start to level out on an HRT regime. Next Monday I'll have been on my current dose for 12 weeks, so I know I have to be patient, but it's tiring when on top of everything else you're suddenly being woken up by night sweats (drenched clothes, not just a bit sweaty).

Hello Dotty,

When I started HRT I was on continuous estrogen (100mcg patch changed twice a week) and 1x 100mg Utrogestan tablets taken orally at night for three out of four weeks each cycle (days 8 to 28). I decreased my progesterone towards the end of 2018 and I thn had debiliating anxiety and panic attacks, so I went back to my original regime. Then last summer I doubled the progesterone dose (200mg on days 8-28) and a few months later became very unwell, so I halved the dose again beginning of December and that's what I'm on right now (100mcg Estradot and 100mg Utrogestan for 21 days). It's all so confusing!

To be honest...I'm not sure if I made a big mistake going on HRT in the first place :'( I was just trying to feel better.

Hi are you post menopause or peri menopause? The dose you are taking doesn't seem to match either. x

Hi Redlocks

So sorry you're feeling like this.

As Dotty mentioned, the normal dose for perimeno is a cyclical one at 2 x 100 utro for 12/14 nights, which should result in a withdrawal bleed. 100 every day will be a continuous dose and may not give a bleed. Some ladies do shorter progesterone cycles under the guidance of a gynae or menopause specialist.

If you are still peri then your own cycle could be coming through. I have issues with this every few months, so mine is having it's own little party as well and throws the regime into confusion.  Can you get in to see your GP at all? xx

Hello Dotty,

Sorry about my delayed reply - I'm taking the HRT for severe PMS and PCOS, which has a lot of similar symptoms to meno, and I've found this is a really good place for advice and support. I'm not sure if I'm peri, it's possible but I had that ruled out before.

Thanks Mogster71; the GP cannot do anything so I'll have to wait for my appointment in April and review things then (seems ages away). I'm taking the progesterone continuously except for a one-week break (I'm restating it tonight for three weeks until my next break).

The anxiety and depression have both improved which was the the main reason I wanted to try HRT on top of fluoxetine, but the night sweats mean I've had a week of sleep deprivation which obv doesn't help anyone's mood! I'm hoping it's because my body is still adjusting - I was told it could take at least another month.

Hope you both are doing well and thanks again.
