finding it hard to stop overthinking
« on: February 14, 2020, 06:16:14 PM »

I'm finding that my mind seems to have its own agenda these days with the anxiety and worrying.

It seems to lock in on a memory of something I've said or done and then I end up going over and over it, dissecting it down and it ends up spiralling into a panic even though it's in the past and I know that I can't change it, but still it doesn't stop the worrying.

Even though I have suffered with anxiety before I've never had it like this, it's just so unpredictable, have any of you found this x

Oh yes CG,I had it last year, I thought I'd never break the cycle,I'd get something in my head, say for instance a song and it wouldn't leave,I'd go to my bed and it would go on and on and on,not just like an annoying tune you've heard,a lot more severe than that,or like you, something that happened in the past and I'd replay it over and over, omg it was awful, all part of anxiety and depression I'm afraid, what I'd try and do was a counting strategy, picture a number 1 in your head, like draw it,all the way up to 9,then back down again,it's a retraining thing for your brain but look up online, there are lots of them to stop overthinking. I'm better now thank goodness and I'm sure you?ll get there too xx

Guilt.  I've suffered a lot in recent weeks  :'(

Maybe have a notebook and jot down your thoughts?  Get them out of your head?

Anxiety is self funding  >:(

Thanks Jaypo and CLKD for replying. Ive tried the writing it down, but that doesn't seem to work for me as I then worry who is going to read it, so am trying the distraction side of things at the moment and hoping I will drop off to sleep soon 🙄 x

What I still don't really understand is, why does the lack of oestrogen causes the mental health issues in some, but not in others x

Who knows.  Why do some people get postnatal depression and others don't.
Are you on any medication?

Because oestrogen controls many things in our body and when it goes, everything goes haywire and some women suffer way more than others,no rhyme nor reason why  :-\

I've suffered from this for years (as a part of anxiety/PTSD).

I don't know if you're looking for suggestions or solutions, but I've found that meditation, yoga and exercise are the things that work best for me in dealing with this.

It's horrible.

Countrygirl it's because hormones are precursors to our moods.  I think for those of us who were sensitive to monthly fluctuations/suffered with pmt etc, memo is harder.

I was told by a specialist (as I've sought help for the progesterone side of things), that my receptors are particularly sensitive.

Interestingly when my hormones are balanced I'm perfectly fine and the anxiety/low mood is resolved. Hope this helps x

HI CG it's horrible isn't it, that feeling of being switched on too fast. I try all sorts of things at night to wind dowm. I had CBT ages ago and was told to imagine putting all my worries into a big box and wrapping it up so that it could be opened and dealt with the next day. It sounds a bit daft but it sometimes helps, though when I'm really raging with something that is upsetting me, nothing really helps apart from time to calm down and come to terms with what ever it is. You have my sympathy and I hope you manage to sleep as tiredness makes it worse.

:thankyou: ladies for your kind words x

Littleminnie I'm on beta blockers and have been for years for anxiety, but the shift when hormones went awry caused a big up shift in symptoms and intensity sadly x

Jaypo/Focus I think I'm going to have to find something physical as have tried the meditation side of things and failed x

Perinowpost I have had some good patches since being on hrt and got glimpses of the old me, and have been told peri is a rollercoaster so am hopeful they will settle x

Birdy I will ask for my thyroid results as they mentioned borderline along with iron being on the low side and my cbt person has mentioned they feel there is something physically like a deficiency by the way I react x

Shropshirelass I'm having cbt at the moment and just had sessions extended so I'm hopeful x

I had ups and downs throughout my menstruating years.  HORMONES !  >:(

I would be OK until the week prior to a bleed, even if a period wasn't due.  The night B4 I would sob.  As I aged, in my 30s, I had bad pre-menstrual syndrome: sudden nausea, anxiety, excessive hunger ......... once the bleed began those symptoms would disappear.  I would forget until the next month  >:(  :'(

As The Change kicks in hormonal upheaval can become dominant and may begin to rule how we feel overall.

I was advised to eat every 3 hours: 24/7.  To stop that awful lurch when the body became hungry.

For me the best strategy to stop overthinking is to keep myself busy.
I have a really tough daily program, hard training and start to feel better even than before menopause. My main concern is about my health and the risks of taking hrt and doing my daily routine and avoiding googling are my best strategies for reducing my anxiety.
