Kliofem, Sertaline and Night Sweats
« on: January 30, 2020, 10:14:14 AM »

I've been on Kliofem 2mg/1mg for just over 4 months.  My night sweats haven't improved at all.  I was also on 100mg Setraline for anxiety.  I went to see my GP last month because the night sweats hadn't improved and she said I needed to give the Kliofem 6 months and suggested increasing the Sertaline to 150mg as that also helps with menopausal symptoms.  That hasn't helped with the night sweats and now I'm sweating profusely during the day too with the slightest exertion.  Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm going to see the GP again next week and want to go prepared with as much information as I can in the hope that there is a more effective treatment for me.  My husband and I are at loggerheads because he's permanently cold and I'm wanting windows open and I'm piling weight on because I'm too embarrassed to go to the gym because of the excessive sweating.

Hi fuzzymum

 :welcomemm:

Sorry to hear about your ongoing issues and the HRT/ADs. it does seem a bit out of order for the doc to INCREASE your ADs when your sweats were not controlled by the dose of hRT. The usual advice should be to change the route or dose of HRT because at the very least oestrogen should control sweats casued by oestrogen deficiency.

Have you had tests just to check whether the sweats have any other cuase eg baseline blood tests for thyroid function  and blood sugar etc?

It may be that you are not absorbing the oestrogen well from the tablet route, or it could be that the norethisterone ( in that particular preparation ) is interfering with the beneficial effect of oestrogen as it apparently can do in some women ( some get flushes on cyclical HRT when they are on the combi part of the cycle ie the oestrogen and prog part).

So - if I was in your position I would want to decrease the ADs back to the dose they were - and to control the flushes, think about other doses/preparations of HRT/oestrogen or delivery methods. Unfortunately the only other combi tablet HRT at that dose has the same progestogen so that's probably no good....(Elleste) - but you could for exmaple try a patch ( although these are going through a bit of a shortage at the moment) or oestrogen gel - with separate progesterone?

Have a look at the treatments section on the menu, and the HRT preparations are all listed.

How old are you and where in menopause - how long since last natural period before you started on HRT?

Don't despair - you will find a way through but you will need to experiment a little - and then you'll be bounding to the gym and start to lose that weight  ::) . In the meantime have a look at your diet and see if there are any changes you can make re what you are eating (reducing processed carbs, extra fat and sugar, alcohol etc) and look up some exercises on youtube etc that you can do at home. Exercise videos and strength training etc - even cardio you can do in a small space with star jumps or running on the spot...

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on :)

Thanks for the reply and advice. I'm 52 and prior to starting HRT had a Mirena coil for over 20 years so no idea when periods might have stopped. I had it removed in October and not had one since.
I'm going to be a bit more insistent next week and hopefully blood tests may give more clues
You're absolutely right about making other changes to diet etc and I?ll give it my best shot
