Hi. I've been happily using fem 7 patches for 14 years (I'm 66 now). and as they are unavailable, I'm really struggling to cope using Evorel. They give me headaches, upset stomach, anxiety, depression and hair loss. Options seem to be Utrogestan /patch or Mirena/patch. Can anyone tell me their experience of either? Thanks so much.

Hi starbuck fan - your post seems to have got missed - not so many members go onto this board! Sorry to hear you are struggling with the Evorel. You probably know that the Mirena has the same progestogen as the femseven patches so if you tolerated these then you should be fine with the Mirena, which although high dose, delivers most of the prog to the uterus to protect the lining, with minimal systemic absorption - much like Femseven. You could then use an oestrogen only patch alongside - and there are plenty of these available albeit various brands.

I must add I have no experience of this regime - but just going on what you've said. I am a patch/Utrogestan user of long-standing and take this regime cyclically and have a (shock horror!) withdrawal bleed because I don't like taking prog all the time.  This works fine for me - I would find continuous Utrogestan too sedating and fog-inducing so I put up with t he bleed instead ( which I absolutely HATE to still have to do). I'm the same age as you and have been on HRT almost as long - which is encouraging!

I would be like Hurdity, starbuck fan, but I use gel (oestrogel) and utrogestan, also on a cycle and have a bleed and I am 58.  I couldn't take Evorel either. I had a mirina but cant don't continuous progesterone.  I had tried 6 types of hrt before settling on this which works for me.  I have to say I was never given fem 7 so I cant make a direct comparison for you.
I use the utrogestan vaginally instead of swallowing them (which although not put down as a way to take them on the official leaflet is perfectly fine and is prescribed that way by meno consultants) to minimise any side effects and after a bit of adjustment am doing just fine.

Thank you so much for your replies. I think I'm progesterone intolerant and I have tried the Mirena combination, which gave me side effects, even though it has the same type as Fem7. I will talk to my GP about Utrogestan and reverting to a monthly bleed.
