Are these night sweats? Irritated bladder help
« on: December 04, 2019, 06:41:46 PM »

Hi everyone, it's been a while since I posted but I seem to have developed an uncomfortable problem.  My bladder feels irritated,  it feels full even though it isn't.  It feels like cystitis but I don't have any pain or stinging when I pass urine.  I have read around a bit and could this be the start of VA?  I generally feel quite comfortable down there and don't feel dry at all.  Also, I am hot and a bit sweaty on occasions at night but the sheets aren't soaked through like my mum said hers were during the change.  Do night sweats start before hot flushes?  I am 47

4 me vaginal atrophy was like razor blades up there  :o.  Repeated urine infection-type symptoms but samples came back negative.  Appropriate treatment sorted the problem.

There seems to be no set pattern to how and when any symptoms might start.

Hi Rosepetal - before I started getting flushes and sweats properly (and believe me you will know if/when you actually get the real thing!) I began to feel just as you did ie hot and overheating at night but not wet with sweat, no. It would be enough to start a pattern of distrubed sleep from the early houra when I would toss and turn. I wondered exactly the same thing - is this what night sweats are? If you are very lucky they won't develop any further but if you're unlucky (or rather more usual!) as your oestrogen levels drop then they may well become the full blown sweats!

Are you still having periods and if so what is your cycle doing - is it irregular, periods heavy light short long etc?

Do go to your GP to have a urine sample check as I just found out I had a bladder infection.

I had all the heat in peri for 4-5 years and chills, now it’s more hot flushes and night sweats which, for me, are so much nicer as they are minutes long.

Then last week I had the hours long heat again and only a little soreness down below - so not like I’ve had in the past where it’s obvious it’s cystitis. I was wondering if was VA but went to GP and they found blood in my sample and was very sore when they pressed down on my bladder. The antibiotics have made me feel so much better and no longer hot.

Think mine was caused by new shower gel but know change in Ph balance can make it more frequent, so hoping it’s a one off.

My periods are still regular at 28 days with the odd shorter one at 24 days and the odd longer one at 32 days.  I must be peri at 47, I've felt a hormonal shift for maybe the last 4-5 years and my 50mg sertraline isn't keeping my emotions in check as well as it was!  I also have an unusual bubble popping sensation down below that I have read other women have :(

I forgot to say I'm not on HRT yet.  With regards to the bladder issues I don't have any incontinence issues, my bladder just feels full/irritated

Hi RP73,

I have had the same issues and was told by my GP that it was another meno side-effect (unsurprisingly).
Interestingly shortly after that, I had a pelvic scan and was talking to the Dr who did the scan telling her how I feel my bladder doesn't feel as if it completely empties after I've been for a pee so that shortly after I go I feel the need to go again.

At the time my bladder was full for the scan so I went for a pee and she called me back in, rescanned by bladder and there it was - still partially full. As she told me, meno causes a loss of elasticity in the bladder (drop in oestrogen) which results in the witholding of urine and as a result the feeling of fullness and irritation.

I suspect boosting oestrogen might result in some benefit.

Lolafraola, your bladder issue of incomplete voiding sounds like a hypertonic pelvic floor rather than "loss of elasticity". See Birdy's first, longer post of 4 December above.
