Hi Ladies,

I'm 45 years old, had a hysterectomy June 2018, still got my ovaries. A question about Ovestin. I had virginal atrophy all this year (11 months). Also had VB at the start of the year, went on antibiotics and got rid off it. I've been using Ovestin for about 9 - 10 months. My doctor only had me use it full time for one week, then two times a week.
I believe it helps but while saying that I've still have had one pain free day, I can be okay most of the day but I still can get sensitive and itchy down there. I also use Vagisil two times a day on the outside off my virgina. I would say on a good day 90% better on a bad day 70% better. When I complained to my doctor I was still having problems she put me on herbal tablets (Remifemmi) which bothered my ovaries, so had to stop. And she won't let me go HRT at the moment because of my ovaries.
I wished I used it three weeks full time as per the instructions when I first started? Should I try using it now for three weeks or less full time? Should I go and see another doctor?
Any advice will be appreciated

I agree that just one week loading dose wasn't enough. Also, the Vagisil is probably irritating you. What you could do is switch to Vagifem internally and just use Ovestin externally. You could also use a better vaginal moisturiser, such as one of the Yes products, as these are less likely to cause irritation than Vagisil. If your GP isn't helping, try another one. Most don't 'get it' when it comes to VA and other menopause symptoms.

Thanks for your reply. I would have to see a doctor to get a script for Vagifem?
And I'm Australia and had never hear of Yes. Sadly we seem to be very limited to virginal creams over here. I had to go to the chemist the other day to buy some more Vagisil, and they stopped doing the type I'm currently using, with help of the assistant we could only find two products for me too use. And it the same at other chemist too .
I just don't know if I should try doing every night for two weeks or just go and see another doctor?

Hi Lyncola,

Yes, Vagifem is prescription only here so probably in Australia too.

You could probably get the Yes products directly from their website, but the cost of postage might be prohibitive. You do have a good one in Australia called Olive & Bee, just olive oil and beeswax so very pure. Have a look on their website as I doubt you would get it in the chemist. That aside, why not try using the Ovestin every night for 2 weeks, you've nothing to lose. If that doesn't work, maybe try another doctor then.

If you are on Facebook, the Vaginal Atrophy Facebook group is a good resource, and there are some Australian ladies on it who may be able to advise on products available to you. It is a private group so you need to answer three questions before you join.

Just a thought, but I sometimes use a little good quality Emu Oil as a moisturiser. Doesn't irritate me at all, but it's all trial and error.

Hi Lyncola, try some multigym actigel for irritation, you can get it from Amazon,it is better than yes or vagisil and is very soothing,and specifically for the reason you need something, some chemists sell it here Boots for example,, but I had to get mine from AMAZON

Just been doing some Goggle research, and the multigym actigel is available from Chemist Warehouse in Australia. I was only there the other day and it was one of the ones recommended to me. My question to you is have you used it before? And when I was doing my research I found the leaflet that comes in the box, after reading though the information I have two concerns,
They never mention using it for virginal atrophy?
And they said you can only use it for no more than 30 day's at a time?

Lyncola, Jaycee's post reminded me of another product. Are you able to get Balance Activ Moisture Plus pessaries? (They also do a product for BV but you want the moisture one.)

I use a small amount of MultiGyn Actigel occasionally, about every week or two, as it maintains the pH balance of the vagina. I have also used it successfully to treat BV. It stings on first application but this should wear off. Personally, I wouldn't want to use it instead of a moisturiser as it would be too stingy for me, but we are all different.

Lyncola, Multigyn actigel isn't to be used all the time but it is very good for itching and irritation,and it can sting a bit at first but it works, for VA you do need something like vagifem, but for just moisturising i found yes is best

Update on me, I saw another Doctor today, couldn't get a female so had to go male. Well he was useless, didn't even know brain fog was a menopausal problem, just looked at me like I'm a idiot. Men just don't get it, I thought because he was a doctor he might know something. I think I will do Ovestin full time and see what happens? I just don't know for how long I should do it for 2 or 3 weeks?

As both doctors you've seen haven't a clue I'd play safe and go with the intructions on the leaflet. I'm prescibed to use every night "posterior introitus" whatever that means.
