Scalp biopsy
« on: December 24, 2019, 05:27:59 PM »

Has anyone had this done? i have had hair loss for over a year and finally got to see a Dermatologist,i have seen 3 times now,and he diagnosed Telegen Effluvium, with a pull test, he gave me some Dermovate steroid lotion for my itchy scalp, the last time i saw, yesterday he said he wants to do a scalp biopsy, next month,he said it woud take 4 months at leat to have it done in hospital, so he will do it at the surgery, not looking forward to it, but it might hopefully provide some answers
I feel very lucky to have a derm at my usual surgery
He thinks its down to stress, but i think it coud be partly hormonal, as thinkong back i restarted on Livial [Tibolone] and vagifem around the same time, but didn't really notice much hair loss at first, then i had a lot of stress,
My own Dr changed me from Livial onto Evoral Conti, which only made the hair loss much worse and hair was falling out all over the place, even when i was eating hair would fall onto my plate
I have a lot of hair loss from the crown down and now losing it from the frontal area, and all over general thinning now
I would be interested to hear of anyone elses experience

Well jaycee...I have never heard of it being done at a surgery only a specialist clinic but if it were me and I was in your position I would bite his hand off!  What harm can it do and it may take you further than you will get anywhere else in finding out what is happening or indeed what is NOT causing it.  There are plenty of diagnosis which can be done from hair samples.
I'm sure it won't be nice but I would think it certainly worthwhile.

My hair has got thinner and I do have episodes where it seems to fall out more.  I am not sure if I am more aware of the "hair loss" thing because I have been reading about it all on here though?  It is a bit worry and I look in the mirror and think "its a bit thin" but bearing in mind I have had other greater issues for years and years...if this is a side effect or imbalance in the hrt well mine's not so bad I cant live with it.  Not being on hrt is not a option for me so...???

Tell us more where you are with this?

I already have an appointment to have this done on the 20th of this month, he asked for a nurse to be present too
I do feel very lucky to be getting this done ,even with my own surgery
I have read about people having to go miles away or not even getting it done on the NHS
Also recently had a brow lift at my local hospital,
Not as it sounds though ,i had a droopy eyelid, from having Bells Palsy about 8 years ago, and my optician suggested it and referred me to my Dr, who had to apply for funding which took about 9 months, then a consultation with a surgeon ,who explained it was classed as a brow lift because of the way it was done, through the brow,
I had no scar and dissolvable stitches under my brow,,and thrilled with the result, but my forehead and head at one side is still a bit numb
It was a lady surgeon and she said sometimes it drops again, if it does ask my Dr to refer me back to her
I was very surprised i was accepted as it wasn't terrible, although i was conscious of it
I will update of course after it is done

I am in Noth Yorkshire Ladybt28, luckily i live only about 10 minutes away from the hospital, and although i have heard some complaints now and again, i can't complain at all
Although re,the eye op, i did feel a bit guilty, because my son in law had a very bad varicose vein and wanted iy out, but they wouldn't do it on the nhs, luckily he could afford to pay for it
When i saw the surgeon about my eye,i said i would have paid for it being corrected if i could have afforded it, which i couldn't [about £3000] and he said "oh goodness me .don, t pay for it we can do it here" i almost fell off my chair
