Medroxyprogesterone? Anyone?
« on: October 16, 2019, 09:46:31 AM »

Hi

I seem to be intolerant to progesterones (the green tablets in Elleste duet and the Mirena coil are ones that I've tried so far) I've been referred to a Meno Clinic which I'll call today but apparently theres a long waiting list (April being the next available slots). I'm hoping that when my turn comes around - in 6 months!!! - I can get Utrogestan and try that.

In the meantime, I've been prescribed Medroxyprogesterone to try for 14 days a month (to use alongside the Oestrogel that I had to stop using when my mirena was taken out)

Has anyone else used this progesterone? I've been given 10mg tablets. Be interested to hear peoples opinions.

Thanks

Hi there

I think (and someone can correct me) that the brand name is Provera.
I take a 2.5mg dose on a continuous basis as I am 54 and not peri. Are you peri?
I couldn't tolerate elleste or femoston, they caused terrible migraines ( as did utrogestan sadly) but a week in, touch wood, I seem to be perfectly settled and sorted with Provera which is proving problem free

It's unclear from your post why you didn't get on with the previous progesterones though so mine may not be a similar issue.
Unfortunately it does seem a bit trial and error to see which suit.

Hi
I guess I am still Peri. Basically I had 10 months period free last year. Went on Elleste Duet for 6 months whereby I hated the Prog' days, and then trialled the mirena/gel method. Had the coil taken out in Sept. As I didn't quite make it for a year before I went for HRT help, I guess that puts me in the Peri stage still?

10mg seems a lot to me that I've been put on for 14 days a month. Especially as progesterones seem to make me bloated, cranky, tearful, sleepless and bleed heavily.

Hi

The dosage is correct for a peri menopausal woman.

Are you also suffering with other symptoms?

Hi Graciemouse

As kdee69 has said the dose prescribed is correct for peri menopause.

I use Provera and for me it's the best progesterone I've used but we are all different.

However what reason did your GP give for not prescribing Utrogestan?

Hi ladies
Thank you all. The GP this morning said that to get Utrogestan I need to see a Menopause specialist first as the surgery dont prescribe it. I have an NHS one booked that I did online and its for 1st APRIL!!!  ::)

This afternoon I've managed to book (via my medical insurance) to see a lady in 3 weeks!

I'm now in a little bit of a dilemma as regards Do I start back on the gel again today and then in two weeks start two weeks of the Medroxyprogestine or (as I'm seeing the Meno Specialist a week after that) do I hold fire to see if she prescribes me Ultrogestan?

Since having my mirena removed at the beginning of Sept I've tried to cope (even had a spell on citalopram which made my flushes/night sweats and insomnia even worse) I've decided that I can't cope without HRT anymore as my bad nights and sweats are impacting me at work. I'm either on my knees with tiredness (apart from the odd days after I've taken a phenergan tablet to make me sleep through the night sweats) or I'm at work having many flushes that soak my clothes and make me hide in the bathroom until I've cooled down  :'(

I realise that Utrogestan might not be the answer to my prayers but I'd at least like the opportunity to try it especially as I know I get on with the Oestrogel from when I had my coil. I was given the Medroxyprogesterone this morning as it seems I'm not good with either norethisterone or levonorgestel.

Hope that all makes sense. It's nice to hear Lanzalover that Provera works for you. That sounds positive. If I get prescribed Utro and it doesn't work, at least I have a fall back.

Thanks xx

Hi Graciemouse

Thanks for the reply.

As it's only three weeks I'd be inclined to just use the gel then if they prescribe Utrogestan you can start it or the Provera  after your visit.

Good Luck and keep us updated

Hello

Just a little update. I saw the Menopause specialist this morning and she's given me Utrogestan 100mg to take EVERY DAY. She said that because I'd had 10 months without periods (prior to trialling different types of HRT) I'm "nearly there" as regards menopause.

I've done the Oestrogel for two weeks now - 1-2 pumps and it's been great at controlling the flushes and night sweats - I was expecting her to get me started on a fortnights Utro so she's thrown me a bit by doing the every day routine.

Taking the Utro every day scares me a bit if I'm honest.

Yes the continuous progestogens are normal first line prescription for women who are post-menopausal or nearly so (when they are sometimes prescribed). However if you are progesterone intolerant to some extent there is nothing stopping you from staying with cyclical HRT. Some women do not get on with the rise and fall of progestogens with the cyclical regime even when peri so can also be prescribed more or less continuous use ( eg days 1-25 of utro with 3 day break).

Is this a private consultant you saw? Did you explore with her the possibility of returning to a cycle if you don't get on with the utrogestan? What are your feelings about this and can you get back to her without additional cost eg by e-mail? Maybe give it a try for a few weeks and see how you get on?
