How long does it all last?
« on: June 14, 2019, 06:41:48 PM »

Hi everyone

Reading through posts I know that many of you are peri-menopause.

I am four years without a period, aged 55. Without sounding full of self pity I have felt dreadful for most, if not all of this time. Hot sweats, brain fog, anxiety, aches and pains, loss of libido to name just a few.

I console myself, for want of a better word, that this will pass as it's the menopause but tonight I had a thought - is it? Are my symptoms  those that are only really connected with peri? How long does this all last? Do symptoms eventually ease? I think what I am asking is kind of, how long can I “blame” the menopause for?

Hope this makes a bit of sense.

Menopause is literally, the last monthly period.  End of.

Symptoms however can wax and wane for years.  Any untoward vaginal bleeding; a change in bowel habits; skin rashes - anything that isn't 'normal' should be discussed with a GP/Practice Nurse.  Some ladies keep a food/mood/symptom diary.

A good diet, a regular exercise plan and me time is important.  Is there untying in particular that is bothersome?

Hello Lynda07

I asked a similar question earlier wondering if my troublesome mood swings were all down to the menopause or caused by something else.

One of the great things about this forum is we are all in the same boat and we can help and advise each other, unfortunately we don't hear from women who have come through the menopause and who can tell us their experiences and give us an insight into their lives now.

When my meno started I imagined that once the transition was over I would go back to being my old self. That probably isn't going happen due to increased age if nothing else but I know several women who didn't take HRT and are no longer on the hormone rollercoaster so I assume sanity returns at some point, it would be nice to have it confirmed though!

Take care.

It's The Change - does what it says on the tin.

Thank you both for replying.

You're right Kathleen, there are not many people out there to talk about coming through the other side of this. I was (am) starting to worry my symptoms are caused by something else, even though they seem to be classic menopause symptoms, as it struck me the other day that surely 4 years after my last period I should be well over this now. You're spot on CLKD - it does what it says on the tin.

I feel worse as most of my friends of a similar age are sailing through this when I talk to them about it, I'm delighted for them but do wonder if I'll ever feel right again.

Oh and if I could just get my confidence back too!

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

This too will pass but it may take time.  Lots worry that menopause symptoms can be something more serious ....... our Surgery offers several well women chats with the Practice Nurse as well as the Government offering various investigations, i.e. bowel screening every 3 years ....... We shouldn't blame everything on the Menopause so if you have symptoms that don't clear up or become worse during 3 weeks, a chat with the Nurse/GP/Pharamacist can help.
