Palpitations and sudden anxiety
« on: May 31, 2019, 06:47:39 PM »

At 44, I never thought I'd be told I'm menopausal.  I've went from being confident and care free to a weeping nervous wreck.  I've now starting getting palpitations and its freaking me out.  Is this natural or should I be worried?

I had. Then doctor put me on HRT patches and I had a bit of spotting last week but not a full blown period.

I feel for you Sambam, I'm 41 came out the blue for me 3 years ago, started new job, studying, initially blame my symptoms on all of that. My mood more 'flat' than teary or angry. If you are anything like me you will have no idea of the number of symptoms that can be brought on by peri menopause, for some women it can affect so many body systems which is what can sometimes mke it hard to diagnose. Of course so many GP (also some specialists) are fixated with investigations (they have a place) rather than listening (really listening) to what someone is telling them. I hope you have a good GP who can give you appropriate advice to help you. This website and forum has been invaluable to me (I've just recently joined).

My problem is I have a pituitary gland tumour which deals with all the hormones so between that and the menopause my whole system is f@$ked.  My doctor didnt want me to go on HRT but I had to do something to relieve some of my symptoms (sweats,  rash, aching joints, insomnia, fatigue, dryness).  Since being on the patch some of these symptoms have subsided (not the insomnia) but I'm getting new symptoms almost weekly now.  I even phoned doctor today to make an emergency appointment because I feel like I'm ready for a breakdown :o

That's awful Sambam, my biggest issue is also insomnia although mine seems to be improving with the HRT kicking in. Other health problems always make it more complicated, especially if symptoms of menopause mirror symptoms such as pituitary etc, I have an underactive thyroid. Your doing the right thing getting another GP appointment.

How long did it take for your HRT to kick in?  I've been on mine 6 weeks now?

I've been on medication and its help but not taken it away.  I didnt really have many symptoms apart from some visual and prolactin problems.  I could get an OP to remove it but I'm terrified of operations so I'd rather leave it.  I've never been an anxious person but over the last few weeks my anxiety levels are sky high.

Thanks for helping though.  It's much appreciated.

Sambam, 11 weeks on HRT, feel sleep improving over the last 2 weeks although inconsistent but definately better than its been the last 3 years. I've ordered Menopause - the one stop guide, written by a menopause specialist nurse, waiting on it arriving. Jari sorry you had such a bad experience with HRT for some it isn't the 'magic answer' we menopausal women think/hope it will be.

Hi Sambam,

I can empathise with you totally, and it sounds like you're dealing with a lot

I had never experienced palpitations or anxiety until recently and it is very debilitating. I ended up at the hospital twice with palpitations as they wouldn't stop

I've been on HRT for 3 years, and it worked well with the symptoms I had then( hot flushes and night sweats)  but not anymore

I've seen several doctors, one at a menopause clinic and each have advised something different

I appreciate its trial and error but it would be great for more research to be done to help provide better solutions that work.

I hope you find something that helps you, be reassured that you're not alone 😊x

Hi Sambam sorry to hear you feeling anxiety and palpitations. I'm another lady that cannot tolerate hrt at all. When I was on it I got migraines/headaches every day,my anxiety was through the roof and I generally felt awful on it. I tried patches, tablets and worst of all the gel. I even had a mirena fitted but no joy. I was so disappointed that hrt wasn't working for me. I decided to come off hrt and I now take a very low dose of citalopram and touch wood I don't feel as bad as I did. I'm getting hot flushes but at the moment I can handle them but god knows what will happen if they get any worse! The citalopram has helped a lot with my anxiety though I still get times when it's bubbling in the background. Jari I will order that Marylin Glenville book as sounds good for us ladies that cannot take hrt.  Sambam hope you feel better soon, this menopause can be never ending🙄

Hi Jari I just don't know why I felt so rubbish on hrt. A few of my friends are on it with no issues. My anxiety went through the roof, dizziness,I had awful migraines and sounds weird but almost felt like my chest was tight. Once I came off it I did feel a bit better though still suffer periodically with a migraine and anxiety. Citalopram is an ssri antidepressant,I'm on a very small dose and it has helped a lot with anxiety thankfully. My symptoms are insomnia, feeling so tired, migraines and hot flushes which aren't too bad at the moment but hoping to god they don't get any worse.

I also take 1000mgs starflower oil and a menopace tablet. I'm just so up and down with how I feel day to day it's so hard to plan anything. Like today I've struggled at work as I feel so tired,I'm now in bed at 8pm hoping for at least 5-6 hours of straight sleep. I just feel permanently knackered all the time!

Anyway I shall order that book and hopefully find some tips on what to take to help. x
