If I told the same gp I wanted to use utrogestan vaginally I think she would go and sit in a corner !! NHS also advises there alternatives available. Maybe but this is now highly recommended by a number of experts

I'd email the practice all the links to Menopause Week discussions which were aired on the BBC last week and tell them they need to get some training.  Ref the GP she needs to go sit in a corner anyway Janey - preferably with a dunces hat on!
It's beyond a joke though.  Birdy says her sister gets it in Wales in a post below.  Where in Wales is your sister Birdy?  How can NHS Wales say not prescribable if she can get it?

No Ladybt28 it was a woman !! She also proceeded to tell me that she had seen for herself the consequences of HRT and that to avoid it. Unbelievable isnt it.  Anyhow Birdy I think different parts of Wales have different health boards so different formulary for each. Thank you for your support. I walked away from the gps frustrated and a little upset at the complete lack of interest. The support on this forum helps. X

I despair!!!  "Seen the consequences of hrt", I suppose she may have encountered someone who was on hrt and "got" cancer, either that or she still lives in the days of the discredited study that was produced.  Anyway, she should keep her own feelings to herself and be objective and read up on the new studies.  How many of her patients will get osteoperosis and lifetime of pain for her views    sorry rant over but they really make me mad!

I suppose you're right about the formulary but that's no help to you is it.

NHS Wales have given me a contact number of a person who puts drugs forward for the formulary in Wales. I cant believe this hasn't been mentioned to them before ! This doesn't solve my immediate problem though does it. I am right in thinking that a private consultant in  North Wales would be able to prescribe utrogestan despite it not being on the boards formulary?? Thanks ladies

Thanks Birdy. I have made apt at a menopause clinic 15 miles away.The stress of battling with a gp is not what I need. I am sure a great deal of other women have had to deal with this too. Totally wrong. All GP surgeries should have menopause trained medics.

As far as I understand any doc can prescribe any med that is not on the formulary list if it is licensed (or even if not in my case), anywhere in UK, as long as they note this and justify it. It sounds like the docs are just sticking to the recommendations so you should actually be able to get hold of it if you can stand your ground!

Hi All,
I'm sorry to hear about the hassles and rubbish ladies in Wales are having trying to get utrogestan.  In England it is a standard (and relatively cheap) medicine that the GP can prescribe from the Menopause template they have on their computer system.
I'd like to suggest if you've had your consultation with a menopause specialist and have a very clear understanding of the HRT regimen prescribed but your GP won't/can't prescribe it, you may buy HRT via an online pharmacy. It is legal to do this because they will ask you to go through an online consultation before actually prescribing the medicine. You will have to pay for this consultation as well as the medicine but it will be delivered to you. The cost and the process may be prohibitive for lots of us but it might just be the answer for some. Good luck!
