Normal blood results and hrt
« on: April 17, 2019, 07:21:03 PM »

Hi was just wondering if any of you lovely ladies have started hrt despite blood test saying hormones were normal?
My worry is if bloods came back normal , would hrt give you to much Estrogen?
Also could being on thyroxine medication give you a false reading of hormones ?
Thanks. X

Hi there HRT is indicated, depending on your age and what your periods are doing as well as your symptoms. Blood tests don't tell you a lot. FSH levels vary throughout the cycle and you can't determine menopausal status from one leve. Here is what it says on this website:

"A normal level does not exclude early menopausal transition and a raised level does not exclude continuing ovarian function."
https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/diagnose.php

If you are over 45 and your cycle varies by a week or more beteen periods then you are definitely peri-menopausal so if you are experiencing symptoms then HRT might help you. At this point depending on how frequent your periods are then a low dose may cushion the fall in oestrogen at the end of the cycle and between cycles. You can;t know until you try. Femoston 1/10 is often a good one to start with according to reports on here.

Your thyroxine levels should be monitored once you start HRT (after 6 months I think and regularly) especially oral HRT as they might need adjusting later.

Hi. Hurdity thanks for your reply, I will be 51 in a few weeks, periods are irregular can have a period then another one 18 days later, 5 days 41, 58.
My doctor has given me Evorel Sequi to try. I know this is a medium dose so was wondering if I could just cut patch in half on both patches to reduce dosage . X

Hi pink
All my blood results came back normal right up ipuntil my periods left me 5 yrs ago
I'm 51 now and was 39 when my periods started going crazy going and going when ever they felt like it
Only blood test that showed low hormones was one that was done on 1st April past there ..
really hard to understand and I get confused over it no matter how much I read I'm still confused in my mushy head

If it was me I'd get onto hrt now as I pushed through trying to cope with out hrt for  yrs and to be honest I could kick myself now for doing so !!

Hi Karen max thanks for your reply. Are you on hrt now and if you are when did you start taking it.
You just think that because blood results say they are normal it makes you doubt yourself about all the symptoms you are having. X

Hello ladies.

I think the blood test angle works both ways because my consultant told me that she thought I should get my oestrogen up to 300  ( whatevers ) but since then she has been guided by symptoms and hasn't mentioned testing again.  I understand that some women feel well whilst on a lower figure and others need to be much higher. Given that our levels change so often anyway at this stage in our lives the range and severity of symptoms has to be the guiding principal.

Take care everyone.

I started hrt 2 years ago with almost regular periods but I had terrible symptoms.
My gyn and endocrinologist said that my diagnosis for early meno is based more on my symptoms and less on blood tests.
My FSH was about 35 and my estrogen about 26 when diagnosed. A few months ago was normal.
On hrt my estradiol is about 293 pmol and FSH about 2.

Hi pink
I've just started back on hrt last month , I was on everol conti patches for around 6 months then they stopped working so after that being my 5 hrt my GP referred me to hrt clinic where they have started me on new hrt so I'm only back onto it from 1st April but so good so far , I'm post menopause 5 yrs so haven't had a bleed but this new hrt will give me a bleed each month ( I don't mind that as long as it helps my symptoms)
I had lots of blood tests done over last 10yrs and I was post menopause 2 yrs before anything showed up in results so I definitely wouldn't go by blood tests they change so fast , if your having enough symptoms to know it's related to menopause then I hink your own body lets you know when it's time to seek help
I'm just sorry I left it so long trying to push on with out hrt as it seems to me the sooner we try to get into right hrt the better it suits us and works for us , that's just my opinion
