Femoston and brain fog
« on: March 07, 2019, 08:50:44 PM »

Dear Ladies I am looking for a bit of advice please. I have been taking low dose Femoston Conti tablets for around 6 months after stopping patches which didn't agree with me. I find the tablet much better but stupidly when I came back from holiday I thought I will go at this menopause max strength by taking HRT tablet and Promensil double strength together . After 12 days of taking both I suddenly realised it was having the opposite effect of optimum. I was starting to get underarm sweat but worst of all was being unable to think straight. My brain fog returned. Has anyone tried combining HRT with natural supplements  Promensil. I was also experiencing soreness wearing trousers. I have reverted back to HRT alone and wonder if I need a higher dose. I am on daily tablets 0.5 mg thank you.

Hi Nuclearscientist.
Yes, I think you need a higher dose.
I've no experience of promensil, but I'm on Femoston Conti too.
You are on a very low dose, so because you're experiencing symptoms again, then I would say you need more, 1mg/5mg. I can't see supplements making any difference to the hrt. But I'm no expert.
I started off on 0.5mg, but it wasn't enough.
Maybe your soreness is from not enough oestrogen, but do keep a look out for VA.
Your doctor can tell you if you've got vaginal dryness, and prescribe you cream or pessary.
Or you can buy something like Vagisan from boots....
Hope this helps....xx

Thank you. I did try using replens moisture like tampons recently which helped. I am on 0.5mg/2.5mg which I guess is a low dose.  How did you know the 0.5mg was not enough for you and how long did you try it for. I have taken pill for 28 years without effects like these. The dyhydrogestone suits me much better than progestogen in the patches which made me anxious and tearful and lose confidence massively. I have been on this low dose for coming up to 6 months now. I would be very grateful for advice so I can go back to Dr. I I ordered a few books about menopause which I am waiting to arrive. They featured in a Guardian supplement on menopause.
Thank you.

Hi, it's not recommended to take hrt with ‘natural' menopause remedies such as promensil, femular and the like. These preparations contain black cohosh, which is not only toxic to the liver and kidneys, but will also interfere to stop your hrt from working. The same is true of St John's Wort.
I'd give it a good couple of weeks back on the Femoston only to let the natural stuff get completely out of your system and let it settle, before investigating other methods of hrt. Good luck with it all xx

Thank you Northarm.

I did a little research on this , this morning, and was going to post what I'd found out.
You are right, some natural remedies can interfere with hrt.
I previously said I didn't think they'd cause any interference, but I wasn't 100%, so I've been looking it up.....but obviously you posted before I got chance.....thank you..

Nuclearscientist = I'd do what Northarm suggests, and if your still feeling the same then ask doctor if you could go up to 1mg.. as we say, 0.5mg is only a very small amount..
Good luck, let us know how you get on.....xxx
Ps/ I know I needed a higher dose because of all my symptoms returning, crying, moods, not sleeping, anxiety, which was a big one for me, just in a dark place, I increased, and felt better, now I'm mostly ok, some days I have a blip, but who doesn't, so for me the femoston conti is the best I'm going to get, after trying other hrt regimes.....as you say, the progesterone in it seems to be ok for me. Xx

Thank you so much this is wonderful to receive such caring and detailed advice. One of my books has just arrived the menopause and HRT by Kathy Abernethy  a clinical nurse specialist in menopause. I will digest all your advice in conjunction with reading up.

Hi Birdy.
I started off on, Premique, don't know if that was going to work because it got discontinued,
so changed to Everol Conti, no good, but to be honest, I haven't got much recollection of even being on them, but I know I was, because they're in my draw! Work that one out.Lol Then onto Femseven patches, oh lord, the struggle with them, the migraines were sooo bad everyday, then onto Femoston Conti, which took a while, and a struggle, and still made me feel crap, so then changed to Sandrena gel, and Utrogestan, which the gel was great at first, but then made me feel poorly, just not right,(I know I'm not right, but that's a different story..lol) and the Utrogestan made me feel crap too, SO, went back onto Femoston Conti because now I realise that , that was the best I was going to get..I have however tweeked the dose, and mostly take 1.1/2mg which gives me,7.5mg progesterone. I've managed to get two prescriptions off my doctor, one for the 1mg and one for 0.5mg. I've even been known to take an extra 0.5mg, if I get symptoms back, which works for me. My doctor knows what I'm doing, well, she did, she's gone now. Xx

Thank you to all of you. My doctor, well one of the newest young Drs in our practice was marvellous she upped the dose of Femoston Conti tablets to 1mg from 0.5 and after 6 weeks I feel a lot more like myself. She also referred me to the local menopause clinic and I have an appointment in 3 weeks. The v dryness is less of an issue but I think could be improved. My dr said that the clinic is up on all the latest treatments. I will report back. I wanted to thank you all for providing information and advice
Best wishes.
