Mirtazapine yet again
« on: April 15, 2019, 11:53:24 AM »

I'm feeling so awful, sitting here in bed crying and feeling like my life is over. Been on mirtazapine for 7 weeks now, including 10 days at the higher dose, and I just feel worse than ever. Massive anxiety in the mornings and then crashing depression which leaves me unable to do anything much. Dr insists I need to give the higher dose more time to work, but surely if it was going to work I'd be seeing some glimmer of improvement after 7 weeks? To make matters worse I have a check-up at the Breast Care Unit this afternoon - still on 6 monthly checks after cancer diagnosed May 2016. Going there brings back so many awful memories I don't know if I can face it, feels like that was the point at which I lost my previously happy life and entered this day-to-day nightmare. And there's no escape - so far hormones don't work, ADs don't work, psychotherapy doesn't work...... :'(

Why doesn't it work?

Go to the appt. today!  That is one less issue to worry about.  Maybe discuss with them.  You could be suffering a type of post traumatic stress !

I don't know much about antidepressants all I know my best friend was put. on that one and she deteriorated so much she was admitted to physic unit first time ever in her life. They now have taken her of it and she has been out seraline and got along way to go. Is been so upsetting watching her go down she was suffering bad aniexty then got depression on that one! I think it's trail and error what suits you and don't leave it if it's making you worse get professional help. Good luck.

CLKD, I've discussed with the breast care team on several occasions, and they act as if they've never heard of someone suffering ill effects from sudden menopause caused by chemotherapy. The breast care nurse I spoke to today seemed to be completely unaware that some types of chemotherapy destroy the ovaries, and she's meant to be a specialist! So I've given up expecting any help from that particular dept. I think there is an element of PTSD, all mixed up with previous life trauma and the hormonal car crash, which have combined to create this miserable mess. I have an appointment with the health psychologist at my local hospital tomorrow, so we'll see what she has to say....

When it comes to ADs, you have to remember that it's a statistical fact that they simply don't work for a certain percentage of the population. And given that nobody really knows why they work anyway, your question is impossible to answer and pretty pointless. Ditto hormonal treatments - as we all know on here, it can take trying many different regimes to find one that works, and a few women never do; again, no-one really knows why. After all, if we did, we'd be able to find the solution easily...
