Water infection/ Vagifem/thrush
« on: April 08, 2019, 02:05:26 PM »

This menopause journey is really challenging me! I'm now reluctantly on my 3rd course of antibiotics this year for suspected infection, sample sent and shows white cells and pus. My symptoms temperature feel unwell and terrible lower back ache and burning when wee. Now the things is it's happened 3 times I try to use Vagifem and I think it irritates my bladder and gives me thrush. Has anyone else had this as I don't take antibiotic unless I really have to as it upset my ibs big time. Eating loads of natural yogurt to help also water sample showed sugar in urine both my parents on insulin diabetics and most family members diabetic. The nurse said it could be because of infection doing blood test when finished antibiotics. Tryed D'Mannose but not helped. Any advice?

Get some other treatment for vaginal atrophy - some ladies are sensitive to the fillers/coating to the Vagifem - I use the sister product, Ovestin which is delivered into the vagina by an applicator.  Other ladies find that 'yes' and 'sylc' products as well as VA treatment, useful.

What does the 'pus' indicate?  Your symptoms of feeling generally unwell can certainly point to an infection.  Thrush needs to be looked at to be certain.

Blood test for what, did the Nurse explain?  Another urine sample should be sent off immediately after finininsh the ABs to check that infection has been sorted.  There is a thread on here about continuing bladder problems.  If I remember the title,  ::) I'll bump it.

Natural yoghurt is different from LIVE yoghurt.  I use the Greek plain type with 'live' in red on the pot.  Lots from a spoon for 3 days plus if necessary, applying into the vagina which is cooling.  Are U able 2 talk to your parents Diabetic Nurse for advice?

Also, an over the counter pain relief can ease symptoms too.  When do you go back to see the Nurse?

I am having similar problems to this!  I started vagifem having not tolerated estriol and ovestin creams.  I did the 2 week load and ignored slight irritation on a ew days but the moment I hit the 2 weeks I had a massive flare up of thrush like symtoms.  I have a red blotchy sore rash all around the vulva inside and out and I have bladder irritation now too.  Feeling of burning and needing to go when I have just been.  Its ridiculous having taken the vagifem to help all these problems!  I shall never take topical oestrogen again as this is the 3rd time it has directly given me this awful inflammation and its not responding to any treatment.  Have you treated yourself for thrush or are you waiting to have swabs taken? I hate taking abs too as they give me worse thrush as well and then I get sore from all the treatments.  I have booked an appointment at the GUM clinic, maybe you could try this rather than the doctor if you don't get much joy?  I do use the YES products and also multigym actigel but sadlly these are currently not bringing relief.  Im sorry you are suffering this and I know how you feel.  I am a crying mess at the moment, its hard to walk and I feel totally broken.  This is a horrid condition and I know a lot of ladies get help from vagifem, but I will not touch it again personally. xx

Hello Donna-paul.

I don't have any personal experience to share but I remember my MIL having many attacks of cystitis and receiving the standard treatment each time. It was only when she began having frequent urination that she was found to have glucose in her urine and was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. It seems that the sugar was feeding the bacteria and that was causing the infections. I'm not saying you have Diabetes but if you are at risk it may be worth asking for the appropriate treatment before it gets any worse. As you may know there is a lot of evidence on preventing and reversing Diabetes with diet so may want to do some research on that as well just in case.

Hope this helps and wishing you well.

Thank you all for your replies the gynaecologist last week I saw for biopsy said not to use Sylk all the time and that Vagifem will help🤔 I got to go back for diabetes blood test as there was sugar there didn't seem any seriousness! But then my Dr was my mums and he didn't treat her diabetes till she collapsed and Pancras packed up so straight on insulin😡 I feel hungry and shakey all the time and thrush like symptoms with water works problems. I asked if I could have my urine tested afterwards and nurse said no need to unless got problems still. Well 6 days on antibiotics and still not great burning and lower backache and urine not clear I do wonder if it's thrush. Got oral tablet to take when finish antibiotics. Yes I am using live goats yogurt as much as I can tolerate, as for my diet I eat prity healthy and diet products I could do with more advice I thought the drs I supposed to be into prevention!

Give us a clue: what do you eat and when ........... have you had a thyroid function test?  A Nurse shouldn't ignore your request if you have symptoms.

I had blood test in feb as I just don't feel so well and told all ok. I have always suffered from low blood sugar so eat 3 times a day ie breakfast lowest sugar granola with blueberries and light soya. Sometime 2 ginger biscuits late morn then lunch 2 slices of gluten free bread with sardines and a banana. Depending if shakey Handful of nights in the afternoon or natural yogurt. Main meal chicken breast salad and small potion of potatoes. I then don't eat till 8ock next day for breakfast. At present trying to have as much natural yogurt. You can't force the nurse maybe an appointment with my nice lady Dr is needed by then I might get my biopsy results🤞

AHHHHH .......... you are going too long between evening meal and breakfast  ;).  Hormonal upheaval can cause shakiness which can be counteracted by eating every 3 hours  ;) I was advised by NAPS in the 1990s.  That sudden nausea, shaky legs, hands, wobbles.  Bananas are a good stand by, lots of mixed fruits and nuts to graze on.  If I get the shakes DH shouts EAT SOMETHING  :D

Otherwise the diet sounds OK ..... you are allowed treats too [see our Easter thread  ;) ]

What would you suggest to eat late evening. I thought fasting was to starve of diabetes. I so don't want diabetes my dad died of it terribly it's an awful disease had both legs amputated within 3 months then went blind ended up in nursing home with vascular dementia🙁

Diabetes is a dreadful disease and if you have a family history, then get in touch with either the Diabetic Nurse or look at the UK Support Group?

I graze on dried fruits and nuts.  Or bananas or porridge is good, I love very thin '????' - can't remember the product  :-\ ........

It really depends on what I've eaten in the day.

Breakfast is a good quality granola between 8.30 and 10.00 a.m., followed by a lightly cooked lunch or salad; odds and sods in the day and a cooked evening meal: curry on rice or pizza, sliced chicken with chopped veggies.

Starving over-night can bring it's own problems  ::) especially for those who don't eat until mid-morning.  I have been known to get up in the early hours if hungry to avoid that awful nausea  ::)
