5 months on and Mirena not settling
« on: December 18, 2018, 07:12:43 AM »

Hi everyone,

I'm off to the doctor's today because after 5 months my Mirena coil just isn't settling down properly.  Before this coil, I had the Mirena for SEVENTEEN years - so successfully, no bleeding at all after a bit of initial spotting.  I then had a year with no coil, before having the current one inserted for HRT purposes.  My question is - do you think this coil hasn't been inserted into position correctly?  Why would this one keep giving me periods on and off when I had NOTHING for SEVENTEEN YEARS with other coils, even when they were changed every 5 years.  I do think that the original insertions were done by an expert (my GP - she was fab).  This one I paid for privately and it was a dreadful experience with a lady who had no bedside manner - wheeled a trolley into my leg during procedure after the speculum had been inserted and wanted to move my feet up and down after the speculum was in too! I actually said 'this isn't very kind'.  I just doubt her skill.  Anyway I'm getting fed up with things now, despite feeling SO MUCH BETTER with this HRT - transdermal is fab for me as I had my horrific daily headaches (I have patches and gel too).  Any thoughts?  I have fibroids - one is 6cms across, but I've had these for years and they made no difference with the coils during 17 years.

Keep smiling.  I'll let you know what doc says at 2pm as it may help others.

Hi CarryWarry

Like you I had a long problem free, period free time on progesterone only contraception so when I had the mirena inserted 2 years ago to use for HRT with oestrogel, I didn't think there would be an issue. Had on and off bleeding/spotting for 18months after and got so fed up I stopped the oestrogel with the intention of stopping HRT altogether.  And low and behold by stopping the oestogel, the spotting/bleeding completely stopped too but of course eventually the flushes started back up.

So I went back to the oestrogel and since going back (5 months) I've had the tiniest amount of spotting - hardly noticeable really.  Dancing Girl has been very supportive on here and suggested that I was probably peri when starting and also that a percentage of women do have spotting on this this regime. I think the mirena is often seen as the bad guy but for me it was the adding of the oestrogen which caused the bleeding/spotting.  It's weighing up what's best for you but I completely feel your frustration with it especially as so many women are bleed free on this.

I think it's worth getting things checked out - I was checked at 7 months post coil and all was well despite the problems.  Let us know how you get on.

Just back from the doc.  A good lady doctor so felt in safe hands.  I am upping my Evorel patch from 75mcg to 100mcg and going to experiment with less pumps of gel.  I currently had 3 squirts of gel as well as my 75mcg patch.  She was open with letting me experiment with less gel and swinging it a bit the other way, if you see what I mean.  She also said that if I still have certain pressure in my head (only when sneezing or coughing now) that I still might want to try a different patch, but I am so loathe to do that, as I would absolutely hate to go back to how I was.  Anyway, we shall see.  She did say the gel is absorbed very well and quickly and that I may want to stick to what I'm doing.  As we all know, it's trial and error.  She said to give the Mirena another month as it could still settle.  Fun and games as usual!

Merry Christmas to all!
