Hi Catkins, I'm post menopausal (5 years) and I have had palpitations, racing heart and flutterings since.
I've had 4 ecg's, I've worn 24hour monitor, 48 hour monitor and 72 hour monitor and neither of them caught anything.  I went down to A&E during the night once because I thought I was having a heart attack but as I was getting wired up they more or less abated.

I occasionally take a beta blocker if they are really bad and it helps.

This morning after breakfast the fluttering started so I thought I would go on MM Forum and read other case histories - that usually calms me down and I saw your posting.

I can even have palpitations in my tummy sometimes...all weird. They are by far my worse symptom.

I still have hot flushes and nightsweats -  I'm not on HRT are you?

By the way I have tried all the types of magnesium but they didn't seem to make much difference although magnesium is good for us so I take it most days. Most of my friends sailed through Menopause and didn't experience  palpitations which doesn't help.  🙇🏼‍♀️ xxx

So is the theory if its due to menopause they are not dangerous?
I had monitor on for 36 hours and fine some of the day then suddenly  bp goes very high ,the doctor said couldnt give me high bp meds cos when its normal it would go to low and i would get dizzy ,she said it's due to emotional stress and to try yoga ,walking etc.

Hi Carol  you just sound like me I've been to AE as well with fast heart rate. And the palpitations and heart issues have been my worse symptoms like yourself. I took beta blockers, but docs took me of them as I felt I was walking on clouds. And don't take HRT just something I've not wanted to take. I know the palpitations are horrible but it's nice to know your not on your own thankyou for sharing your experiences xx catkins xx

Hi ladies, can I ask a question..I have never eaten meat and my family and friends think my horrendous menopause symptoms (palpitations, flushes, anxiety etc) are due to me being a vegetarian? I have argued my case but sometimes at the back of my mind I wonder...could it be?
It's so weird how sometimes it's flutters, sometimes actual palpitations and sometimes a racing heart?
Weird. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi carol, that's other peoples solution to everything, every ache & pain,oh,it's because you're vegetarian.been veggie for 25 years now & I've survived this long 😄 there are women on here that suffer the most horrendous illnesses & are going through terrible menopause symptoms & i'll bet you that the majority of them are meat eaters,so it's a poor argument to say it's because you're veggie xx

My palpitations were quite bad a few years ago and i had all the usual tests, 24 hour monitor etc, all ok.  It was probably menopausal but didn't realise then. I still get the missed beats sometimes usually caused by anxiety but knowing this reduces the fear and the the vicious circle of more missed beats.  There not actually missed beats but one delayed one, it then it feels like a big jump to the next one. If the tests are fine then try not to worry.

I agree - I don't think eating meat would help me at all! I'm 64 and have never eaten meat
since I was a child. My parents  despaired of me when I would choke on a bit of beef...
they even started putting it through a mincer but I just didn't like the texture or anything. 🤭
Think my meno symptoms are what they are. I've tried all the herbal remedies and HRT for 5 months
but nothing has helped so I think it's a case of accepting it for what it is.
When the palpitations start  either take a beta bloker or just wait for it to pass.
Thank goodness for this forum - when I get up during the night feeling really anxious and look at other case histories I realise I'm not alone and it does help. 🙏🏽 XXX

Just tell them that the menopause is no respecter of persons, and attacks both omnivores and vegetarians alike  ;)

Hello ladies.

Heart fluttering, palpitations and general internal jitters have been plaguing me during my meno journey and despite various HRT preparations I am still experiencing them even though I am eight years post meno.

I've had a week long heart monitor on two occasions and no abnormalities have been detected.  In recent years the palpitations have lessened considerably but the jitters still bother me daily and they seem to move between my heart, my stomach and my bowels. Sometimes these horrible sensations just stop and I feel so much better but they always return and I can never figure out why!  I find all this very distressing and anxiety provoking and worry that I'll never be free of them.

I have also wondered if diet has played a part in all this and although not a vegetarian I rarely ate meat in the past because I didn't like it.  My periods stopped eight years ago and at the same time I was found to have Ulcerative Colitis which is an inflammatory bowel disease. I did some research and learned that animal products are pro inflammatory whilst plant products are anti inflammatory so I changed my diet to become pretty much vegan. I also take an anti inflammatory drug especially formulated for UC patients. I have regular blood tests and my inflammatory markers are in the normal range plus my last colonoscopy showed a normal colon so whilst my disease is under control I feel awful due to the regular fluttering/jittering.

It's worth looking at all aspects when trying to solve the heart fluttering problem but I haven't found a solution so far unfortunately.

You all have my sympathies ladies,  it's a rotten thing to deal with and beyond frustrating!

Wishing everyone well.

OMG Kathleen I'm sitting here with a palpitating fluttery jittery feeling under my right rib cage exactly where I have my scar from gall bladder removal? I get this off and on. The Doc had a press around and found nothing?  My palpitations go away ( not for long) and come back with know rhyme nor reason.
But the first minute I feel that flutter I have a sinking feeling.
I eat healthily and drink next to no alcohol or coffee. Although the doctor said a glass of wine won't harm me 🤷🏼‍♀️.
You sound very much like me - I've been post menopausal for 5 years.

Jari...I do take magnesium but not near as much as you. So you take 600mg each day? Is it okay to take that amount?
Well maybe I should try that. I've just taken 300/400mg in the past.

Thanks for sharing ladies. 😘

Thank you Jari, I actually have magnesium citrate in the cupboard ( started taking it then stopped🤷🏼‍♀️) which I'll start taking and once that is finished I'll try the Viridian Brand. Thanks X

Hello ladies.

Carol Litster  -  My jitters are driving me to despair this evening!  Like you they can stop completely for no known reason but they can also continue all day. I keep a diary but I can't see what causes them to start or stop. I realise any anxiety doesn't help but I think they bring on the anxiety, I feel fine when they suddenly stop.

Sorry I can't remember if you are on HRT? I have recently increased my dose of Oestrogel from 2 pumps to 3 but of course now I'm worried that it's too much and actually making these sensations worse. Mind you I'm still having some flushes so that indicates not enough oestrogen. Minefield or what lol!

I wonder if any other condition apart from the menopause could cause these feelings? I'd like to ask my GP but available appointments don't come along very often, unlike these blooming jitters!

So sorry that you are suffering too. It's the pits  and I truly sympathise.

Take care and sending hugs.

Hi ladies

Thank goodness for some reassurance about these awful palpitations, flutters, jittery feelings like Ive had a dozen coffees.

Im 54 - no idea how long Ive been post meno....I assume I am but my levels have never been tested.
I was on HRT for a very short period but came off it as Id rather not take it.
Ive succumbed to going back on - if only to see if these awful symptoms go as at least then I will know.

So far I get told so many things are anxiety.....yes I do have an anxious personality - but I know I do which in my book means I can tell the difference.

I also have MS so yes I do get concerned as to what is linked to what......I think after reading many posts on here that the lovely menopause is answerable to alot more than MS right now.

So......magnesium - deficiency in this could be contributing as well.
I mentioned this to my doctor and get “we dont test for that.....just another fad.”

Have any of you noticed a difference when taking a supplement - or is oil better tummy wise?

Thanks for letting me waffle.....I actually dont feel as lost in the deep end x
