Yes I also get a racing heart feeling sometimes in the night especially if I`ve had an unsettling dream. Or too much red wine (!) I`ve also been waking at 2 or 3 or 4 am and unable to get back to sleep for a couple of hours. Just read on another post it could be an effect of the Oestregen in hrt so maybe true for you if you`re taking it? What I try and do is keep calm and not let it develop onto a panic attack and tell myself I haven`t died from it yet! x

Could it be cortisol surges in the early hours?

Me too! Have been waking in the night with heart pumping and feeling unsettled and anxious. Actually I think this has only started since Ive been on hrt so could be something to do with oestrogen as Dancing Queen suggested

Yes yes and yes.... Just woke now like it. Its been happening since august frequently which is why I've started on HRT, which to be fair has reduced the severity of it for me.

Best thing to do if you can't go back to sleep in a couple of minutes is get up and do something. If there's been a blast of cortisol or adrenaline to the system it's unlikely you'll go straight back to sleep. Get up, do a chore, read, watch TV, write Xmas cards. It will distract you and hopefully you might be able to get off to sleep again.

I usually can't if it's after 3 which is annoying.

Does oestrogen cause this then? Been on Femseven Conti 5th patch now.  Noticed that heart is pounding more on waking around 4 or 5am, but then really starts around 8am???  I can feel it in stomach area more than chest??

Oestrogen shouldn't cause anxiety, studies have shown it to reduce anxiety BUT I think everyone reacts differently to things....

Angel 1964.. just a thought, my OH had these "jumpy" feelings in his stomach and palpitations a couple of years ago - thought it was his heart but turned out to be gastric reflux. Maybe similar for you?

Just a thought but I have a cold ' wash down' before bed and also if I get up in the night. It definately improved my sleep.  I don't have sweats but I do wake feeling hot inside/racing heart sometimes which I am sure is Peri. I have been to the GP a couple of times with palpitation worries and also feeling like an electric shock in my hands and feet when I'm about to go to sleep. He put it down to anxiety and hormones. It did subside after a few months.

That's interesting Birdy, literally cannot win with this hormonal stuff. I stopped the HRT in the end cause whilst I was sleeping a bit better I was also feeling weird. And when I did wake at night I was feeling more anxious than before. FFS!!
