How long for a new Mirena coil to work?
« on: November 14, 2018, 08:53:23 AM »

Hi all,

I had both ovaries removed in Dec 2015 and they put in a Mirena coil for the progesterone. I'd had a coil previously and got on well with it. They said without ovaries they last 4 years. The one I had pre-op ran out at 4 years when it should have lasted 5. I've now 3 years post-op and for the past 7 weeks I've had awful fatigue, disturbed sleep, loss of motivation, anxiety, aches and pains. Only just clicked for me that I'm sure the Mirena has run out. The symptoms are almost like a milder version of PMDD. I want the old me back - 7 weeks ago I was weightlifting 3 - 5 times a week and preparing to compete, and now I have lost interest in pretty much all of that. Have only been in the gym twice in the past 3 weeks and one of those took me 2 day to get over.

Going to GP this morning to ask for a replacement, but how long roughly do you think it takes for the soothing effect of progesterone to kick in?

How much oestrogen are you using?
I doubt it's the Mirena running out, you could be needing more oestrogen??  Have you had your thyroid function checked recently? Also B12 and vitamon D deficiency results in fatigue, joint aches, low mood etc. - get these things checked.

You were right. I saw the nurse at Mr Panays clinic today and she upped estrogen from 75 to 100, plus recommended to get Mirena changed as it can't harm.
Also said testogel was the wrong thing, should be on tostran, 1/2 pump every 2 days.
I feel relieved I should be feeling better soon after 7 weeks of feeling bloody awful 😁

LJB12 - I am interested to know why tostran not testogel - did they explain the difference between and why one is better than the other?
