Update on my query re breakthrough bleeding
« on: November 01, 2016, 11:39:03 AM »

I posted a couple of months ago re the breakthrough bleeding I was having. I'm 66,have a Mirena fitted and use Oestogel but was experiencing some fairly regular, roughly every 4/5 weeks bleeding, well pinky discharge really, and asked for opinions. I've been on this regime for about a year and thought it should be calmed down. I was using one pump a day and someone suggested increasing the dosage slightly. I tried one and a little bit which had no effect so I now use 1 and a half(ish) and so far so good. I missed a day recently and had some spotting for a couple of days so used 2 pumps to get me back in track and then went back to 1 and a half. I know at my age I don't need big doses of oestrogen so it's a bit trial and error but the point to all this is, sometimes you just need to see what is best for your body.

Hi there chattygal - sorry your post got missed - it must have been one of the days when not many were on the forum. The posts in this section come thick and fast so once they've been missed for a day they disappear over the page!

Thanks for the update. Very interesting to hear that you have used 2 pumps of oestrogen at your age and still have a Mirena fitted - it does give hope to all those who are struggling to get HRT prescribed and those who have been told by their docs they need to come off after 5 years. I would be interested to know what your approx oestrogen levels were on this amount of gel but I don't expect you've had them tested have you?

Glad to hear the spotting/discharge has calmed down.

I recently read that the older we are, the less estrogen we should need with our hrt . I doubted this info and when I asked my doctor,  she said that really, the dose should be given to alleviate the symptoms , rather than going off age. We have to find what works best for us as individuals and it sounds as though you have found the correct balance for yourself chattygal. Glad the discharge has stopped, it can be such a nuisance.

Hi Chattygal

I'm Having a Mirena fitted hopefully next week. I've had one before but had to have it removed due to strange position in womb. I'm 54 and use 3/3.5 pumps gel- would you let me know how you feel on this combo and if you've had any issues with low mood etc.

Many thanks

Sorry I haven't replied to this for so long but new grandchild in the family with working parents has seen my spare time filled for a while. I'm still on this combo and due to have my Mirena replaced shortly. The positives for me are good sleep, which is very important to me as it gives me the energy I need for daily life and fairly even moods. It's not a miracle cure. I still have low moods sometimes and vaginal dryness/thinning can be a problem but overall I am quite happy with life. My doctor has not suggested coming off the gel and the Mirena is keeping the lining of my womb thin which was the main reason for having it in the first place. It's been trial and error for the five years I've been on this regime and it works for me but it doesn't make you feel 21 again so know it's limits
