HRT advice needed
« on: July 31, 2018, 04:52:19 AM »

Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance as I'm sure this sort of question has been asked many times before.

I am (almost) 57, been a year since my last period - my symptoms are anxiety, night sweats and hot flushes. The anxiety is the one I am struggling to cope with.

I didn't relate the anxiety to the menopause until a couple of months ago as I have suffered from it in the past, but the fact that this time antidepressants aren't shifting it makes me feel it's menopause related.

My doctor started me on Evorel Conti patches last week and I had an allergic reaction within hours so stopped them immediately. It had taken quite a lot of courage to try HRT and the fact I reacted so badly was a real blow. I go back to see her tomorrow and am thinking of suggesting I try Femoston Conti as a couple of ladies suggested. Do others agree that would be a good alternative to try?  The other suggestion was to try taking estrogen and progestogen separately but I'm not sure what form that medication would take - would it be from the peri menopause list in the HRT preparations page in Treatments?

I also wondered if there's any sense that some HRT works better for anxiety than others, or if it's really just about finding one that agrees with you and then the symptoms should ease?

Thanks for reading and any advice/thoughts greatly appreciated

Xx

Me again,

I should have said that having a monthly bleed isn't a problem if that's what it takes to get rid of the anxiety

Hi for post menopause you use Oestrogel daily ( 2 to 4 pumps) and Utrogestan every night. It's non bleed and works well for me. X

Hi Dotty,

Do you think I'd be better to try that rather than Femoston Conti?

Hi it's up to you. I can only say what's worked for me. Femoston has a kinder progesterone but is only available in one strength for post meno.

The good thing about Oestrogel is that you can change the dosage to suit your needs. I started on 2 but am now on 4.

It also means that you could use it on its own for a little while before adding the progesterone so you could see if the oestrogen causes any problems.

A lot of women seem to have side effects from the Utrogestan but I don't have any. Try not to read the horror stories about it. I scared myself silly before starting it!!!!

All I can tell you is my own personal experience.

Send me a message if you want any more info. I'm happy to help xx

Hi Dotty, in answer to your question about anxiety in particular, there doesn't seem to be any one type of HRT that helps with anxiety more than any other - unfortunately it really is just trial and error. I'm struggling with anxiety and still haven't cracked it; right now I'm on Evorel 100 patches, plus Utrogestan 100mg 10 days per month, but if you do that rather than continuous you have to cope with the withdrawal from progesterone, which can be a quite a pain in itself. I'm also on a very low dose of an anti-anxiety drug called pregabalin  (50mg twice a day) which does seem to've given me a bit more stability moodwise, but it's taken a long time to build up.
