See a gyn consultant this week who insisted I 'shouldn't' be menstruating at 56 and that my regular cycle is 'mimicking menstruation' but is more likely sign of uterine cancer. He took womb biopsy and I'm left anxiously waiting for results. Is anyone else still menstruating normally at 56?

I think there are lots of ladies who are still having periods at 56!

Wouldn't go too him/her again!  Why wouldn't ladies be menstruating beyond the expected age?  Is he a private consultant?  At least your've had the biopsy ...... hot foot to your GP and tell him.

I finished at 56 and half and my sister was 58.

This man talks utter rubbish.

Thanks everyone - anxieties much allayed. Sparkle, you're right, he did make sweeping statements (and assumptions) and I wasn't very happy that he proceeded to do a biopsy there and then which was unexpected and a bit painful. CLKD, he was an NHS consultant - appt arranged by my GP when I happened to mention that periods were still normal and I had a bit of ovulation spotting on 14th day. Consultant thought that was dodgy too, but I have always had this and smear tests always been negative. I think I might drop a note to GP to say his comments were scaremongering and not accurate as from folk's replies its clear that other women still menstruate in the mid to late 50s.

Don't worry about it, I was still cycling normally at 57 (I may still be but now on HRT so can't be sure). I was also told I couldn't be as everyone has stopped by 55. Just shows the depth of ignorance about menopause.

Hello Badger and welcome to the forum.

My hot flushes etc began at nearly 52 but I continued to have regular periods until I was 54 and became officially post menopause at 55. So started out average but then edged towards late. I am 61 now and still have flushes and anxiety which I'm hoping my newish HRT will eradicate sooner rather than later.

Your consultant clearly needs educating and a few moments perusing this forum would improve his knowledge immeasurably! Sarcasm aside it's no wonder our faith in experts is shaken when they demonstrate how little they understand of patient's actual experiences.

I really feel so sorry that you have had this worry. Generally concern arises over bleeding you are not expecting that does not follow a pattern ,so for example if you have PMT this is a sign of ovarian activity or cervical mucus and is most likely normal. Periods can go on to 59/60 according to the gynae I asked on Web md last year and she is a world class expert who has written many books.However you can have bleeding from a thickened lining without ovulation so maybe he is being careful.His manner seems very blunt and frightening to me- I think you have been very brave. My last period was 57 in February but I am 58 now and wondering if this is finally all over so you are not alone.There are several of us here in this group having a later menopause.x

Thanks to everyone for their reassurances. Had TV ultrasound today that revealed polyp that I can have removed and also that I was still hormonally pre-menopause - so consultant was indeed talking nonsense. He now wants me to have a Levosert coil put in to reduce bleeding but I've refused this on the basis that my bleeding is actually perfectly normal. It was really good to know there were other women out there still having cycles at 56.
