Help with Utragestan
« on: July 01, 2018, 04:02:33 PM »

Hi All

I hope someone can help.  Have had the usual 2 years of symptoms, anxiety, night sweats, flushes, aching joints.  Am now 54 and its been a year since last bleed. Doctor was really good and finally said wasn't sure so sent me to the menopause clinic.  They put me on 2 pumps of estrogel and 100mg capsule of utragestan daily for 25 days out of 28.

All has been much better but the dizziness and nausea have been quite bad.  I have read quite a lot about it being used vaginally.  Is it safe to use it vaginally for 25 days as all the posts I have read no-one seems to be taking it vaginally every day.  Also being in a relationship makes that also difficult.  Can you maybe alternate between vaginally and orally?  Does taking it vaginally make the dizziness stop?

Absolutely love this site and love reading everyones experiences which has made me feel so much less alone, less crazy and less frightened …..

Many thanks x

Hi Kimdg

 :welcomemm:

Great that you were referred to a menopause specialist straight away!

Vaginal use is recommended (but in UK is off-licence) for those who experience side effects such as dizziness from oral use. I have never taken it orally and manage to cope OK for the 12 days I take it (every 6=8 weeks). Many of us who take Utrogestan vaginally do so on a cycle for the reasons you state - if in a relationship it would be a right pain to do it like this every day. It's not that it is not safe - just not what most women would want to do! Not sure about alternating but you could try it as your body should acclimatise to the different levels -  but it would have to be consistent and you might be more likely to get erratic spotting though?

Anyway do let us know how you get on - yes the website is great and very informative, and the forum is also very supportive :)

Hi Hurdity,

Thank you so much for the information.  I feel very overwhelmed and not sure what I am doing.  I feel a bit unsure about how many days I am supposed to take utragestan for as I have only been told 25 days out of 28.  Being post menopausal I thought I was supposed to take it every day.  How many days is ok to take 100mg vaginally.  Also at first I only used 1 pump of estrogel and the 1 capsule of utragestan daily.  After a week I felt really bad, including nausea and dizzy.  So I upped my estrogel to 2 pumps and it seemed better.  Does more estrogel counteract utragestan?

Many thanks x

Hi old advice seems to be 25 out of 28 days so your body can bleed if it needs to . But new advice seems to be to take it every day with no bleeding.

I use 4 pumps with 100mg orally . I have no side effects xx

Hi Dotty

Thank you for that info.  The consultant said to take utrogestan every day but when I collected the prescription it said 25 out of 28 days.  So confused.  At least the night sweats are easing so getting some sleep, which I think is the holy grail of everything...
Just not sure whether to try the utragestan vaginally as it seems a lot to do that every day.  Hopefully someone can shed some light.

Many thanks  x

The leaflets in the boxes of Utrogestan haven't caught up with the new regimes .

If it suits you taking it orally then why change it?

Hi Dotty

The reason I was thinking of changing from orally is because of the dizziness and nausea, which I have read on this site is usually from the utrogestan.  It isn't the worse but it does get bad enough to stop me going out. However, was wandering if increasing estrogel would sort it instead.  Very new to this and not sure what I'm doing as I'm sure you can tell!!!

I do take my Utrogestan at night. I would love to try taking the utragestan vaginally but am not sure I should take it every day, as I have read on here that it becomes a higher dose vaginally.  It also seems other people on the forum are also post menopausal and taking utrogestan vaginally but I am not sure whether it is every day.

Hi all,
Just to let you know. I take utro 100mg every night vaginally ( no breaks)  Its definately better for me taking it this way as
opposed to orally. I had terrible side effects when taking it orally.
My oestrogen is 50mcg estradot patch changed twice a week.
My libdio has returned yay! I just plan ahead for naughtiness or pop it up afterwards! I use an applicator to get in up high near the cervix .
Hope this is helpful .

Can I ask a Q? I use vaginally but alas have such a low libido I've not been concerned about this re does soon to be a lot of wastage and creaminess.. even when I insert a new pessary a day later. how would this affect my partner? I take the 200 Utrogestan.

Hi there,
I find if you insert the utro as high as you can get it( i use an applicator) there seems to be very little residue. I usually insert it after ‘ naughtiness' . I believe there are studies that address your question re: it affecting your partner and there may be some tranference. But tbh I find vag use no problem at all ( atm) I use 100mg daily and no side effects to speak of. That said I only swopped fro oral use 3 months ago but fingers crossed.
I think you may get spotting if you try to alternate vag / oral use . I tried it that way to and it did cause me spotting. I think it must be due to the flutuating levels .
Think its best to stick to one route .
Hope this is helpful.
