menopause support
« on: April 08, 2018, 04:09:03 PM »

Hi ladies, I just wanted to thank everyone on this site for guiding me through this terrible time in my life. The support I have had is second to none, went shopping yesterday for all the extra things I need to now include in my life.... bicarb, cordial, herbal teas, vaginal moisturisers which I couldn't get in Asda at the pharmacy and left red faced, think I will ask for that one on prescription when I get to doc.

Have been for a brisk walk today and know I have got to keep this up to try and ward off the utis that come with atrophy...feeling more positive now thanks to DG, CLKD, and everyone else xxx

I really think a menopause expert should be in every GP practice...I have just learned that GPs don't even cover this in medical school. I think if hormone levels were checked earlier when presenting symptoms of menopause it would lessen the suffering and the need for some other unnecessary tests and therefore save the NHS a lot of money.

I haven't felt well for years and not one gp or other health professional I have mentioned this to has indicated this could be down to lack of estrogen, instead they suggest it could be psychological.... what's going on?

You need a prescription for vaginal atrophy treatment.

Let us know how you get on.

Chrissy99 - I buy all my vaginal moisturisers online - it's far easier and I buy in bulk which makes it a bit cheaper. Teh GPs sometimes prescribe vaginal moisturisers but don't always know the right ones.  Many prescribe Replens which I found too messy to use.  I like SYLK because you use very little at a time and isn't messy. Remember, don't use vaginal moisturisers at the same time as the local oestrogen or it can effect the absorption - so use Vagifem at night and moisturisers during the day.
If you feel itchy or sore then Multi Gyn ACtigel will get the flora balance back to normal within a couple of days use but don't use this everyday.
Urogenital atrophy is manageable but it needs regard attention.
I'm afraid many of our GPs are still in the dark ages when it comes to the menopause.  DG x

Hi ladies, just back from doc's she didn't know what Yes or Sylk moisturisers are, had to look it up and no not on prescription where I live...will now order from Amazon.

She has put me on HRT in patch form and said I shouldn't need to use vagifem or other moisturisers I'm not convinced as I don't want the utis back. I suppose its trial and error.

Thanks again ladies, hope you are all doing well.

Systemic HRT is often not enough to help urogenital atrophy on it's own and it actually states in the Nice guidelines that local oestrogen and vaginal Moisturisers are needed alongside full HRT. Having said this you may find the patches do help. Do at least use vaginal moisturisers.  Your GP is not up to speed. DG x

Good advice from DG chrissy99 you most definately do need vagifem or hrt cream if you are having recurring uti,s don't let doc dissuade you try your practice nurse for vagifem if not go back to gp and say you'd like to try it as your very inflamed and sore, really push for it.in only two weeks, or less in my case, you'll notice a massive difference downstairs and I've had no utis for nearly a year now.its now called urogenital atrophy as dg pointed out and they've done that for a very good reason at long last.battle it out with gp you will get there.good luck.
