racjen - I get exactly this anxiety.  It is always in the morning and it was way more than just a panic attack. When I read up on it, it is to do with our bodies trying to wake us up with cortisol but during the menopause things can misfire and we get adrenaline instead.  Exercise is a good antidote but I can't do it as I have CFS too.  I went for relaxation hypnosis with my GP and that has helped me cope (plus pregablin but I know you don't want to try another new drug).  I also found that if life in general was stressful then my morning episodes were worse so keeping life as calm as possible helps enormously.
