I am reasonably happy and stable on Evorel sequi patches + vagifem ...norethisterone is a bit heavy going plus I've had an ablation so do I need such a strong prog?  I am 48 and plan to stay on HRT as long as I can so I thought I'd ask about separate patches and utrogestan or Provera.  GP said the surgery can't prescribe either of those as not licensed for HRT ? Also why am I taking vagifem and systemic HRT when patches will do the job?🙄 (it took months and consultants advice for them to be prescribed...now she wants to take them away!) I said - so what prog do ladies use who have oestrogel etc? She said that it's only given to women without wombs?! was going to ask about doing a longer cycle but I think it would be a waste of time.....so it's evorel or nothing..,if I want to try something else looks like I'll have to go private...so bored by all of this...oh...then after all this she took my blood pressure and it was sky high!😂

Your GP can prescribe utrogestan . It is licensed for hrt.

Hi and welcome to MM Zara69

Look under TREATMENTS on this site and print off all the sections - particularly the Progesterone section- and go back to the GP to show him/her. Unfortunately GPs are rarely clued up on HRT so we need to educate them ( with subtlety ).
If the GP won't prescribe ( and if you want to try a longer cycle you should probably see a specialist as this should be monitored with regular scans) then ask to be referred to a gynae or menopause clinic.

Thanks ladies...I've seen all of the drs at my surgery not one is pro HRT.  I'm generally ok on the patches plus vagifem - I just over think everything and wonder if other combinations are better...my urethra still burns first thing after a wee but not all day as it used to.  I know it can take forever for those bits to recover...

Zara69 - Avoid caffeine, fruit juices and alcohol.  Drink lots of water.  Use vaginal moisturisers daily  e.g. SYLK or the YES products, but don't use at the same time as the Vagifem - so if you have used the Vagifem before going to bed, you can use the moisturisers in the morning.  DG x

I had a bit of a battle with my GP a couple of days ago but insisted she look into Utrogestan for HRT as I am really suffering with the prog part on tablets and patches.  She did and has now prescribed it for me.

I think you should politely insist you'd like to try it (if you still do) and show her/him this: https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.352.pdf   Section 1 clearly states it is used for HRT!

And also this: https://bnf.nice.org.uk/drug/progesterone.html which is from the NICE guidelines!!!!!

Good luck x

Yes heideif67 - it is always good to go to any doctors appointment well prepared, with prints outs of good factual info etc. - as in my experience this gives a far better outcome.  Doctors don't tend to like this as they have to actually discuss options and it can expose their lack of knowledge - tact if often required!!!  You obviously approached this in the right way and got what you wanted and needed.  BRAVO.  DG x

Indeed Dancinggirl...  The lack of knowledge I've experienced from my own surgery has been overwhelming.  Thank goodness for MM and other reputable sites where you can obtain and cross-check information for yourself.

Zara69... your doctor doesn't even seem to have any basic knowledge of HRT.  I'd be tempted to go elsewhere and have someone LISTEN to me, try to UNDERSTAND my needs and HELP me.  It really isn't too much to ask.  Nobody likes to make a pest of themselves at their surgery but equally, nobody wants to be living in bl**dy misery!

You would think, would you not, that with half the population being women and a large portion of them likely to need to access HRT that at least ONE doctor per surgery would have more knowledge than their patients!

And calm...

I was told something similar when I first enquired about HRT! I think they said Utrogestan is for women after a hysterectomy (??!) and also mentioned for pregnant women (not sure if that's true) and definitely not for HRT. There must be something confusing them on their prescribing database.

Well...I asked this GP what did she know about utrogestan?...she admitted “nothing” but then went on to say the surgery can only prescribe combined patches or tablets 🙄.  I will see how I go for a couple more months but I'm considering side stepping them and paying to see nick Panay or someone on his team...I'm a short train ride from London.  I'm 48 so have years of this nonsense...next time I go back they will probably tell me it's time to stop HRT ! Thanks ladies x
