John Lee’s book - what your dr may not tell you about menopause

Hi everyone,

My best friend has got me the above book and has been reading it herself.

It seems to talk about oestrogen dominance and progesterone being the answer.

Am I right that this a largely outdated theory? I really don't want to read it and get all confused or worried about something that is not relevant.

I'd like to be able to say why I haven't read it in a kind way if anyone has any suggestions. If on the other hand it's got a good evidence base then I am properly confused!

I think this has largely been discredited - when you read about all the women on here who suffer really badly from progesterone intolerance it seems unlikely to be the answer we're all looking for. Certainly my specialist has not truck with it whatsoever.

My understanding is that, early in peri its the progesterone that starts depleting first,  causing the symtoms of oestrogen dominance . Then as time goes on, the oestrogen starts to lower causing more significant symtoms. I think more physical symtoms ... atropy, an increase in flushes , aches and pains and anxiety. But the progesterone cream has been discredited by prof studd.

I'm in the John Lee phase now with the low progesterone and surging oestrogen. I don't know what he wrote about post menopause though but I have heard that some women do well on progesterone for hot flushes then too.

They're all theories like progesterone intolerance, which become factual to those who experience them (and possibly unproven to those who don't!). I'm open to all theories if it leads to us trying something that may help when the standard ones aren't. There's still so much to learn about hormones and no doctors really have all the answers yet.
