Advice re. Mirena coil & alternatives
« on: January 19, 2018, 04:43:25 PM »

Hi ladies... First time on here (or any forum for that matter) & would really appreciate some advice.

Currently in peri-menopause.  50 years old.  Fit & active inasmuch as I eat a healthy balanced diet, walk a lot with the dog & attend the odd yoga class if I have time.

Pre-HRT symptoms were mostly night sweats, brain fog & 'stabby' moods.  It was the moods in particular that prompted me to go on HRT.  I was being an absolute cow to my husband who is a poppet and did not deserve it.  He's very understanding and supportive tho & justs wants me to be happy.... again  :)

Initially prescribed Elleste duet 2/10 which gave me awful backache and acne!!!!  Now on Femoston 2/10 - both backache and acne are even worse.  Feel like I'm on a permanent painful period and DO NOT want to be on painkillers every day.  Backache is so bad I can't even do any gentle yoga.  When I roll over at night, I wake myself up.  I have never had a back problem.  I'm also feeling really miserable but am not convinced this is because of the HRT - more likely because I'm aching all the bl**dy time.

Had a telephone consultation with the doctor who recommended the Mirena Coil.  TBH, I don't really want it but she's pretty much said there are no alternatives.  I thought I could possibly have some sort of tablet/patch for oestrogen and perhaps a progestogen gel.  Apparently not, although I'm sure I have read somewhere that there is one available she said it was only for contraception??

I'm sure you've all heard it before but I just want to be 'me' again.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ever so... H x

The Mirena with seperate oestrogen, as gel or patch, can be an excellent HRT combo. I had the Mirena for 4 years and used Oestrogel alongside and this was the best non bleed HRT option I ever tried.  So well worth considering. DG x

Hi Heidi

I am on my 3rd mirena coil.  At first when the first and second coil were fitted for about a cople of weeks my periods were erratic and a bit heavy and I remember thinking whats going on? as these are supposed to stop them.  I wasnt peri or pre or anything to do with menopause then(happy days!!).  it settles down within weeks and basically I never looked back.  This latest one put in in April last year is purely for the progesterone and makes life really easy, one less tablet to think about.

I have just started on 4 pumps of gel (last night) i did put them on at the same time, but reading on the forum I may split them between morning and evening.  I am starting to feel better whether that is the effect of hope again by trying something new but its a nice feeling and I will not knock in.

Just had testosterone blood and thyroid taken so I will see if they throw anything new into the mix.

Good Luck xx

Bring me Sunshine -
that is a very big dose of oestrogen to start with.  My gynae advised to start low and then gradually increase over several weeks if needed.   4 pumps per day is maximum dose!!! - I found 2 pumps per day was more than enough.
Can I suggest you go down to 2pumps per day for at least 3 weeks and only increase if you really feel you need to?
Your body does need to adjust gradually.

AAh thank you Dancing girl.  I didnt make that clear im on 4 now but I started on 2 for a few weeks went up to 3 and nothing so I had an estradiol test and it came back at 215 pmol/L so I was put on 4 pumps.  i think I just dont absorb it as quick.  Mind you i needed 3mg of elleste solo before i felt well last year, was great for 3 months and then the migraines started so I had to come off tablets.

Its all trial and error thanks so much for the concern BMS xx
