Huffing and Puffing Anyone?
« on: December 06, 2017, 09:43:49 AM »

Hello ladies.

I am having a horrible blip atm and I am experiencing internal shaking and low mood. I've just realised that I've started huffing and puffing again which I last did about a year ago when my morning anxiety and flushes were really bad.  I wanted to mention it because at that time we had a builder in and he said his wife was going through the menopause and was doing the same thing. Could this be another symptom of fluctuating hormones? Perhaps it's too much adrenaline due to back of oestrogen? I thought I would ask if any of you ladies have experienced something similar and if you found anything that helps to alleviate it?

Take care all.

Hi Kathleen

Sorry you are having a blip atm.

Huffing and puffing is one of the few symptoms I haven't had and I've had most of them    I'm sure someone will be along to offer some advice about that.

HRT helped me with the internal shaking and low mood in fact thinking about  I cann't rember the last time I had the internal shaking I can feel my mood lowering when using progesterone but have just switched to Provera and it doesn't seem to lower my mood as much as Utrogestan did but it's still early days.( fingers crossed)

Sending good wishes

I used to feel very bloated prior to each period: what you describe can also be a side effect of stress, I notice Mum does this when she's upset.

Hello ladies.

Thank you all for responding,  your comments help so much and I am very grateful.

Sparkle - My huffing and puffing occurs mainly in the morning when my anxiety is at it's worst so  I think you are right about it being a response to that. That's the thing about the meno, one thing leads to another and it can be difficult to unravel it all.

Thanks again everyone and wishing you all well.

Kathleen, it sounds like hyperventilation, which results from stress. You could Google the condition, as I'm sure that way you will find a more lucid explanation than I can give, but basically you end up with not enough carbon dioxide in your system (we do need the right balance).  There's a trick you can do with a large paper bag, if you can find such a thing. Scrunch up the top of the bag and exhale into it. Then breath in the 'stale' air from the bag. Do this a few times and it should help.

Hello Joaniepat and sparkle.

Thank you ladies for your comments. I'm going to try the breathing technique but if I can't find a bag I'll improvise with something.

I agree about the anxiety symptoms becoming a vicious circle and a very difficult one to break.

Take care ladies.

Hi Kathleen
Sorry to read you are going through this at the moment.
I've been using HRT for a couple of years, seemed to be okay for a while, my anxiety got so much better.  Over the last month or so my mood has been low and find it hard to be happy again, just feel sadness over me all the time.  I've moved to the coast from London recently, haven't settled that well.  My husband loves it here.
Hope you are better soon

Sorry you're feeling like your anxiety is returning vickypk. I see you've recently moved area, do you have time to socialize (ie are you working part time or retired) Meeting new people and broadening your horizons may help? i know it can be difficult when you move to feel settled, it takes time.

Thanks you reply losttheplot
I'm not sure what's going on, just feel so sad all the time since I've moved.  I have retired and got to make new friends.  Just had a busy life in London seeing friends every day.  Don't know if the HRT i'm using is losing effect or it is the change of location.

Thanks Sparkle.
My friends are planning to visit soon and stay here for weekend visits as I'm close to the beach now. So hopefully this sadness will go away. I just cry every day and wonder why I ever moved. I know it's a better life here for us away from the noise and pollution.  So isolating though! Thanks again xx

Thanks Sparkle.
I think it is confidence, going to new groups and meeting people I find a bit daunting.  I didn't realise I would miss London and my old life this much.
I run and do yoga every morning on the beach, my fitness is going well.  It is all on my own so I am bound to miss my friends.  There are lots of yoga classes and running clubs around here, maybe it is the confidence thing.  It is such a lovely place to live on the south coast and lots more to do than in London, why am I feeling as though I am grieving.  Just have to try to snap out of it and hope this sadness goes away.
Thank you for taking the time to reply to me and hope you are well.

Hi. People are doing beach cleaning here all the time, it's great  That's something I could do Think I'll start doing that. I'm just on the coast a few miles along from Bournemouth. I've got to laugh I reckon the builders we have in are fed up with me, I chat with them all the time!! Thanks for your time you have helped me. This menopause thing ain't easy xx

Kathleen - sorry to hear about your shaking and low mood. I don't really understand what you mean by "huffing and puffing". There must be another meaning of it because the only meaning I know of this is when you try to do something eg carry something heavy up the stairs or exert yourself and make grunting noises with the effort of it! ie making a loud fuss almost deliberately on exertion, or loud sighing etc when you get frustrated at something - rather than something that just happens to you. Please can you explain what you mean?

I feel frustrated on your behalf because as you are well post-menopause your hormones will be stable so the right type and dose of HRT should keep you on an even keel and prevent low mood ( if there is no other reason medical or otherwise for you to feel like this). If you are getting shaking it sounds like something metabolic - blood sugar or thyroid - maybe - I presume you've had these measured, blood tests etc? What is your diet like - do you eat a lot of sugar or juicy drinks, refined carbs? (I'm sure you don't but just asking!).
