Probiotics for yer lady bits?
« on: December 02, 2017, 09:18:05 PM »

I see that OptiBac have a product 'For Women', claimed to be good for the vaginal flora and to help with UTIs. It's a bit pricey, so I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried it before I invest.

Thanks.

If you are getting UTI's it is probably more likely to be vaginal atrophy.  Do have a read of the various threads here on said topic!  VA mimics urine infection-type symptoms  >:( so getting appropriate VA treatment may be the 1st starting point?  Get a fresh urine sample sent by your GP for growing in a Lab., a dip stick test doesn't show anything.  Then dependent on the result, if it ain't an infection ..........

Thanks CLKD. I do have VA but have Vagifem for it, and also use Sylk and Actigel. Even so, I was quite interested in a product you can swallow to help the vaginal flora, as it might help reduce the amount of stuff you have to slap on externally. It doesn't half sting sometimes  ::)

Hi yes you can use probiotics vaginally usually to help with thrush/candida especially if having a lot of antibiotics in uti problems.they are very expensive so maybe have a google at kefir milk which I use,it wipes the floor with probiotics and is so much more realistically priced to use long term.have a look as I said,it's minging by the way as its fermented but really nice if you make as a smoothie with maybe banana or something.good luck X

Thank you Daisydot,  I will give the kefir a try. I've had two courses of ABs recently in quick succession, one for BV and another for a skin infection. I took probiotic capsules during the 2nd course, and continued them afterwards for a while, but the guts and vagina are not quite right at the moment, hence my interest in the OptiBac for Women. I won't mind the kefir being minging as at least it won't be horribly sweet! Thanks again  :)

Hi JP you can buy kefir milk I asda in the polish food section it's a green and white bottle around £1-39 best taken first thing in morning before food, waitrose also do kefir milk or you can buy the kefir grains online and make it yourself in airing cupboard in around 2/3 days.I tried this and god it was even more minging than the shop bought milk so I went back to that lol.it was like sticking a stinky old sock in your mouth lol.the things we do to get well eh.read all about kefir before you try I think it's worth persevering with.good luck.

Hi CLKD, I've had the same problem and then followed by Duflican resistant thrush - I've started taking solgar boron capsules - and it seems to have helped hugely and I am sure a probiotic would not do any harm - I take the optibac one as a lot of them don't survive the acid in our tummies.

Daisydot, thanks for further information on kefir, I will have a look in Waitrose this week. Just discovered that Tesco do it as well. Thanks also for the warning about making your own, perhaps I'll give that a miss! Not brave enough to swallow sweaty socks first thing in the morning  :sick02:

Nairn, many thanks for letting me know about the boron capsules. I googled boron and it looks very interesting, being good for the bones as well. It will certainly be worth adding that to my daily intake of supplements, even though I take so many now I probably rattle!

Love to you both,

JP xx

Hi JP,

I have been using the Optibac probiotics for women for approx 1 year and have found them to be brilliant. I had been struggling with recurrent cystitis, UTI's and thrush for years and after about 1 month of starting this supplement I haven't had any problems. I had also stopped drinking alcohol because even one gin and tonic would set off the cystitis, thats no longer a problem  :)
You can get a tub with a 90 day supply which works out a bit cheaper, they are expensive but for me they have been well worth it.

Hi Hayley, and welcome to the forum. Thanks so much for the information about OptiBac for women. I hoped to hear something positive before investing, as they are a bit pricey. It's good to know you can have a g and t again. We need all the treats we can get  ;)
