Started femoston...advice needed please
« on: November 10, 2017, 08:53:07 PM »

Hi started taking Femoston 1/10 on wednesday after probems with getting patches to stay on. This morning I felt a little better than I had for a while, a bit more confident and optimistic. But as the day has gone onmy mood has got lower, Im feeling very tearful and slightly anxious and my heart feels sort of fluttery if that makes any sense? Ive also had a very lowgrade headache and period like pains (mild).

Is this normal when starting hrt? I just feel like I dont know what my mood will be like 1hour to the next let alone the next day.

Has anyone ecperienced amything similar? Hope someone can help

I assume you are peri meno?
I'm afraid your own hormones will be fluctuating so this will have an effect. It does take time for the body to adjust. Try not to over think things. Try and eat well, get out for some brisk walks and keep active.
Things will settle I'm sure - your body has just got to welcome and adjust to the HRT

Hi there I felt very low and anxious on femoston and my mood went so low I had to stop it on day 11..I was back to normal mood within 48 hours of stopping it. I was shocked as I'd pinned all my hopes on hrt too but there's so many more to try. Saying that I was recommended femoston off a neighbour and it's a good one if you can get on with it maybe try it a week or so as these symptoms might go. Sadly mine didn't 😥

I personally think it is wrong to assume oestrogen will sort everything. We do react to HRT in different ways but the initial hit if oestegen can throw the body off at first, especially in peri meno.
Femoston is a good HRT to try - the oestegen is bio identical and the progesterone ( which you haven't experienced yet) is usually well tolerated.
The alternative would be Oestegel with seperate progesteron( in Pill form) but I fear that your reaction to Femoston, Mabel, may be more to do with your hormonal fluctuations than with this HRT.
As the HRT takes control and balances things , then hopefully you will start to feel better. DG x

Thank you dg, have had a bad night sleepwise and feel very low and tearful. Ive taken th pill this morningand think I will try and give it a bit longer unless my mood goes even lower.

Have worked out that my last period (just one spot) was on the 29th october..could where I am in my cycle which use to be 28 days be contributing to feelig like this? I have always had bad pmt, would takig the oestrogen part ofhrt in the week before a period make these feelings worse?

So sorry for all the questions...im just stuggling to understand all this

So much of what you describing is so typical of the peri meno stage.  Before I went on HRT, I had erratic periods, often close together or much further apart. I had so many headaches, often for days and felt very tired and low - I now realise this was all down to the fluctuating hormones. A low dose of HRT should help with flushes and restore some energy etc. but improving low mood often takes some time.  If you have always suffered with PMT, then HRT can make tolerating progesterone slightly more challenging, although some find it helpful.  AS we keep saying, we are all different so experience menopause differently and respond to HRT differently.  I think most of us agree that the peri stage can be the most difficult.
It takes time for the HRT to control your cycle and give you the balance you seek.  Be patient, try not to focus on the HRT too much, try to keep busy, eat well, do relaxing and enjoyable activities.  Please don't expect HRt to sort everything - it won't - nothing is perfect.  DG x

Thanks again dg, altough I do have flushes I dont suffer as muchas some of the ladies on here, Ive alwys been a hot, sweaty person anyway (hypohydrosis) so maybe jyst haven't noticed a lot of difference! However th mood swings are like having pmt all the time,  I have constant joint and muscle aches and on it goes...

I will try and take your advice..I have cut down on caffeinne, walk fairly often and am trying to improve my diet by cooking more meals from scratch and reducing the amount of sugar inmy diet. X

Hi
Sorry to hear about your low mood- just wanted to reiterate what DG has said- give it time. I started on Femoston in July and it took a while for it to sort my symptoms out- I even got prescription for antidepressants, but held off taking them and now am so glad! I'm feeling good on the Femoston and my mood has lifted now- it took time. But I'm there and enjoying the good times. I know from experience I can have peaks and troughs but have learnt to be patient having had a period where I wasn't and didn't stick to anything. Just left my hormones in free fall. I like progesterone, one of the few, but cope well just on the estrogen phase too.
Give it three months in my opinion. If after that you still low, then there's lots you can try.
Hope you get a better sleep xx

Aw thanks shopping queen, really pleased that you found femoston helped...what were your symotoms if you dont mind me asking?  I am worried about the progesterone part as I have always had pmt and think that may mean I'm progesterone sensitive (could have misunderstood though).

Do you take youre tablet morning or evening?...I've been taking mine in the morning but wonder if evening might be better. I currently take an AD at night.

Thanks again for your reassuring post x

Hi, I too am on Femoston 1/10, I have just taken the 1st pill of month 3. I too posted on here after 6 weeks of being on hrt saying my mood was low on certain weeks , DG answered me and gave same advice to try it for 3-6 months, I am peri age 50 symptoms for going on hrt ( no sex drive, vaginal dryness, low mood, anxiety, crying. Although I still worry occasional about taking hrt I do feel much better on it. Low moods in morning have lifted, I am not anxious and I sleep much better , DG was right with her advice to me give it time. Things improve slowly whilst peri, I was going to throw towel in but glad I have not. I take mine at 3pm and this I think makes me have a good sleep.

Jean50 - thank you for the feedback - I find it really rewarding when my thoughts and advice have been of use. I know I don't always get it right - I do try to put myself in the shoes of the person having difficulties - but as I've had 25 years of using all sorts of HRT types (due to premature menopause), I always hope my experience will be useful to others.
I'm delighted you are feeling better.

mabel64 - do let us know how you get on - the positive feedback from many on this thread will hopefully help you ride these early side effects.  Stay positive - good times are not far away. DG x

Hi Mabel64
Thank you. I saw your post and think it's important to report positives. I've often used this site when I've been struggling and it's been a lifeline for me. Think it's important people update when things going well too.
I take mine in the morning- I also think my sleep is better on prog phase and I feel well on it. It's supposed to be the closest to our own prog- next to utrogestan- and has suited me. No hair shedding which I've had on others along with frequent and intrusive urination- no negatives at all! Hope it works for you too.
I had terrible symptoms- anxiety, tingling wobbly legs, aching limbs, generally feeling unwell all the time, dizziness etc the flushing was the least of it!!!
If you look at my posts you'll see what I've tried, and how desperate I was. I was initially on Premique 2 years ago, which worked well for me on giving me some control back but it was discontinued. Jumped from one thing to another and that left me reeling then doctor insisted I stick with Femoston for at least 3 months. I saw a private gynaecologist and meno specialist and he said the same!
I have and am so glad I did. I feel better on it than my beloved Premique two years ago! I realise menopause is a journey ( I might be in a different place hormonally now as I don't think I'm peri more post) and I am going to have blips so just enjoying this and will remain confident I can ride out the blips in future. I didn't have period for well over a year before starting HRT. However, I'd been on the mini pill for years and this seemed to stop periods for me so it could have been that rather than being post.
Just had a bleed on Femoston but I'd been on continual prog HRT prior to this so think it's more of a withdrawal bleed. I am more than happy to have a bleed tbh as the priority was getting on top of symptoms. It's had a good impact on my anxiety too. I wouldn't rule out ADs if I feel I need them. However, think all my issues with this have been hormone related. I feel the HRT is the answer for me.
It felt unbearable initially because I wanted -expected- things to change more quickly. Unlike you, I was totally impatient and wanted things sorted out by tomorrow. I just couldn't bare the thought of weeks feeling the way I was feeling. But DG and the docs are right. It takes time! I'll be checking in to see how you are doing 🤗 xx
