Angeliq update
« on: August 30, 2017, 09:29:37 AM »

I started taking Angeliq nearly 6 weeks ago after being on Elleste duo conti and Kliovance had a lot of anxiety and depression on those and thought changing to Angeliq would be better as the prog is meant to be kinder.
For the first 10 days on Angeliq I had a very acid stomach but it settled down but now for the last 3 weeks I've had diarrhoea every single morning, no pain but need to get to the toilet quickly!!
Have got the morning anxiety and feel my stomach lurching the moment I wake up,it goes away after an hour or two then I feel generally ok but sometimes get a dip in mood in the afternoon.
Im now considering coming of hrt altogether as I've come to the conclusion that the only thing is does for me is stop the flushes,it doesn't help the anxiety or depression. If I thought the diarrhoea would settle down I'd carry on taking it until the recommended 3 months are up and see how I felt then but having to rush to the toilet every morning is getting me down. I'm pretty sure it's not a stomach bug as it only started when I went on Angeliq and I have no cramps or vomiting.
I just don't know what to do now,fed up with going to the Docs and trying to find an HRT that suits me.
Was thinking maybe a patch would suit me better but have no idea what one would be best given that I'm prone to hair loss and have heard that some people have lost a lot of hair on patches.
I'm just totally fed up with it all just as some symptoms get better another lot crop up!! It's been 5 years since my last period and it just seems there's no end in sight  >:(

So sorry to hear you are still having problems Marie62.

I am wondering if the reason for your continued issues might be to do with the fact that all the HRT types you have been taking contain a synthetic progestogen to be taken continuously. For many women - these can give rise to continuous low-grade progestogenic side effects - low mood, anxiety, headaches, fatigue - some of the very things that HRT is meant to help with.

The other thing is that the oestrogen dose is quite low with Angelique and if you are having digestive problems you may not be absorbing it well and would benefit from a higher dose oestrogen? Some women need a higher dose of oestrogen to feel at their best than is needed to get rid of flushes and sweats.

The main thing is that if you don't want to take a progestogen all the time, then you will have to put up with a bleed - unless you go for a Mirena coil - which delivers progestogen directly to the uterus with far less systemic absorption ( although some women may be affected initially).

I have been taking HRT for over 10 years - from late peri-menopause to post-menopause and I can honestly say it's the best thing I've done - I don't have low moods ( just the normal worries that everyone gets about things), nor anxiety or depression on this regime. I take it on a long cycle (with agreement of my doc) - oestrogen patches (50-60 mcg) and then take progesterone (Utrogestan) vaginally) for 12 days every 6-8 weeks. I know from scans that this is OK for me. This gives me the benefit of oestrogen only for as long as possible, a couple of weeks of a bit of fatigue and the odd headache, a small bleed and then back to oestrogen again.

It's a pity your doc has only suggested tablet HRT and in fact both Elleste Duet conti and Kliovance have the same ingredients ( estradiol and norethisterone) but one is half the dose - when there are other ways of delivering oestrogen into your system!

Please do not despair and think about giving it another go. Can you ask for a referral to a specialist - or menopause clinic? Maybe e-mail Dr Currie ( £25 for a  consultation - website home page) in the meantime?

If you can bear to have a bleed then I would personally recommend oestrogen patch (or gel) with separate progesterone or if not a bleed then Mirena coil. Either way you would be able to increase the oestrogen dose slowly and is much gentler on the system as oestrogen is absorbed through the skin - until your moods improved, but without the progestogen nagging away at your moods!

All the preparations are listed in the top Treatments tab - look under HRT preparations.

Hope this helps and do ask if you need to know any more :)

Thanks Hurdity
I'm going back to the Docs in 2 weeks time for a review so will suggest a patch as the tablets just don't seem to agree with me. I've been period free for 5 years but it wouldn't bother me if I had to take something that would give me a bleed. Thank you for the suggestions very helpful  :)

Marie62, Angeliq or femoston are supposed to be the best for hair loss. I took Yasmin, which is the same progestegen as Angeliq and my hair was great. I have seen a post from someone who's hair and skin are great on Angeliq. I wonder if it isn't quite enough estrogen for you?  I used the gel and it was dreadful for me for hair loss, but a lot seem to like it. Premarin seems to be agreeing with me, but I think it's trial and error until you find the right one.  I did read that HRT is a lot better at treating flushes and night sweats than it is at treating depressions and anxiety though.  It's horrible trying to find one that works isn't it?

Hi Katia
Yes Angeliq seems ok for hair I've noticed less falling out when washing it but unfortunately it's playing havoc with my stomach at the moment. Got an appointment with another doctor next week so will ask to try a patch, hate having to keep changing hrt and had high hopes for Angeliq but my stomachs not happy >:( I've read on here that Femseven conti patch contains levonorgestrel this is in microgynon 30,the contraceptive pill that I was on for years with no problems so could maybe try Femseven if they'll prescribe it for me.
It's all trial and error as everyone says maybe one day I'll hit the jackpot  ;D

Imminterested to see how you get on with levonorgestrel. I did ok with it in my 20s but not in my 30s.  Low estrogen, I think, can cause stomach problems.
